@racheljwelcher @danae_hudlow I obviously did not write the story, but I look at it like the Prodigal Son. A selfish child with free will takes much, but finds it doesn’t satisfy. They find it’s not about the it’s about the stuff of the father, but the presence of the father.

@Serti @danae_hudlow I obviously did not write the story, but I look at it like the Prodigal Son. In the parable, selfishness is not seen as acceptable. And in both stories, we don’t see the tree/father as less, even though they gave up finite means. We see them as extravagant in their generosity.

@KevinStamper @danae_hudlow I love the idea that he saw the tree as a loving provider. I don't love that it makes human selfishness seem acceptable, and it makes God finite in His capability to give. As much as we take from God, humans should be faithful to acknowledge His infinite kindnesses and gifts.

@NonDenomMemes @danae_hudlow I guess I don’t read it that way. The tree doesn’t require gratitude, but gives of his own accord, because - like any good parent - it is his nature.

@ZucchiniCakes @danae_hudlow I see your point if the tree’s desire was to be great in stature, but the tree’s desire is to be with the boy. The boy was selfish, but the tree gave willingly. At the end, the tree is not small because its desire was not stature. The tree is happy because it got what it wanted.

@ZucchiniCakes @danae_hudlow But, once the child has grown and learned that all the other things he wanted don’t satisfy him, he learns to just rest in the tree’s company.

@ZucchiniCakes @danae_hudlow I see your thought, I agree God does not diminish physically, but He does give of himself again and again.

@KevinStamper @danae_hudlow Yes I’ve read the book. I’m stymied by how he chose to depict God (assuming that’s the tree), not the boy.
