I have gone through Parliament’s , report and what is inside is deeply disturbing.
It reveals that kidney transplants were done on terminally ill patients, including those with cancer, TB, and severe heart conditions.
In one month alone, one surgeon and one anaesthesiologist reportedly handled 24 kidney transplants, an unusually high number for such complex procedures.
The report says many patients were not properly counselled before surgery.
And it gets worse.
One donor developed kidney injury after donating in one of the kidney transplant hospitals. Two suffered severe bleeding. Others reportedly died from complications after leaving the hospital.
One donor says they were lured with a promise of KSh 1.2 million and got nothing.
Also, some students were allegedly lured into donating kidneys without their parents’ knowledge. Some were paid much less than they were promised
The report also reveals that the transplant team at the centre of this operation included 3 Indian specialists who were reportedly bringing in recipients from abroad, while donors were sourced locally in Kenya.
That raises serious questions about an organised transplant network.
It also raises concerns about transplant tourism, with patients reportedly travelling from Somalia to Eldoret for transplants, and claims some were covered under NHIF.
Even more disturbing, some donors and recipients were allegedly assigned false identities to make them appear related. Somali citizens from Somalia were being given Kalenjin.
That points to possible organised fraud inside a medical system.
My problem with the report is that it did not go far enough into Kakamega and Kisii, where many alleged victims also exist.
And despite all these findings, there still appears to be an attempt to soften Mediheal’s image.
If even half of this report is accurate, this may be one of Kenya’s most serious medical scandals.
A report alone is not accountability. The owners of mediheal should be arrested and charged. Their license should be revoked. I have attached snippets of the report in replies
