Translation can't be about words. This example conveys two completely different ideas using the exact same words. Translation is about *ideas.*

@brianbrands @BeschlossDC D. Hartley refers to David Hartley the British negotiator for the Treaty of Paris in 1783. He signed the definitive treaty on behalf of Great Britain, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized American independence.

@stnwycks Regarded amongst the greatest films of all time, “The Lady Eve” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1994 by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” 3/3

@stnwycks Since nobody else has posted this and it's been requested, this clip is from “The Lady Eve” (1941), an American screwball comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. 1/3

@JoyceCarolOates Most existing capitalist economies around the word today are not purely capitalist at all. Most are actually mixed economies that combine elements of free markets with state intervention and in some cases, formal economic planning, implementation and enforcement. 9/9

sorry, but did Marx fully realize how innate/inborn the "capitalist instinct" seems to be in human beings? probably every follower of T***p however un-wealthy harbors delusions of ascending to the owner-class & leaving their working-class cohort far behind.
Power to the People ☭🕊@ProudSocialist

Lenin warned over 100 years ago that the function of the duopoly is to prevent the rise of an independent working class party and it’s STILL true today. These pesky marxists keep being proven right about everything—which is why the capitalist state works so hard to demonize them.

@JoyceCarolOates On a larger scale, it’s important note that throughout most of human history, societies have been organized around what’s called a “traditional economy,” where humans provide sustenance by customary means, such as hunting, fishing, gathering, or slash and burn agriculture. 8/9

@JoyceCarolOates “Capitalism” is no more innate to humans than is any other form of economic enterprise. It only arose in earnest after the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century which in turn had emerged from agrarianism in England, as well as mercantilist practices in Europe. 7/9

@JoyceCarolOates Lenin was a notoriously terrible predictor of future events. The Bolsheviks never “seized” power from the provisional government in Russia; they just picked up the pieces scattered all over the country after that government totally collapsed. 6/9

@JoyceCarolOates Here’s what he wrote right after that quote (I’ve edited this from an atrocious published translation): “And now the bipartisan system has suffered a fiasco in America, the country boasting the most advanced capitalism! What caused this fiasco? 2/9

@JoyceCarolOates This Lenin quote in the graphic is deeply misleading. He’s not praising the two-party system and the power of capitalism at all. He’s setting it up to discredit it, and praise the growth of socialism as the way of the future. 1/9

@BovbjergMarit @ask_aubry Perhaps more to the point is that ultrasound is just that: Sound. It's as harmless as a song. X-rays, on the other hand, are ionizing radiation, meaning that they have enough energy to strip electrons from atoms, so are both hazardous & require shielding.

@ask_aubry Too be fair, ultrasound is not currently approved by the FDA for use on fetuses. The USPSTF used to point this out, but their screening recommendation now is “ok there’s no evidence of benefit and it’s not approved but this has become standard of care so fine, go ahead” 1/
