He hasn't been handed everything on a plate for his whole career. He's worked hard for them and taken political risks. Whatever the merits of his standing in a by-election, these briefings are appalling.

The numbers in this must be wrong. It suggests hard pressed UK taxpayers will pay £570m for one year of Erasmus?! Turing - which helps more UK students - costs little more than £100m. If the numbers are correct this is a terrible deal at a time when apparently there is no money.

@labour_history I am a huge admirer of Jim Callaghan, but he should have devalued earlier.

#OTD 1964. Sterling Crisis as Callaghan announces $3bn defence of the pound. He tells MPs it will "give time to press forward with the Government's longer-term plans to strengthen the economy". The Times says it is "the single biggest rescue operation" for the £ in history.
