This is largely because, while everyone knows Carmack is a genius, he never really sought out fame. He also never really based his identity on being a gamer or game developer, he was always about the technology first.

I played using the dhewm3 source port so maybe it's just an issue with the base game on modern hardware?
I'd recommend switching over to that if you still wanted to keep playing. It also supports Resurrection of Evil!
