#TechPaperThursday | Early Architecture Concepts for the Habitable Worlds Observatory Researchers from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Jet Propulsion Lab - California Institute of Technology and partner institutions are advancing early designs for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), a flagship mission aimed at imaging Earth-like exoplanets and searching for biosignatures. The paper highlights the first three Exploratory Analytic Cases (EACs), covering observing strategies, error budgets, and key design trade-offs, powered by integrated modeling approaches. CODE V was used to support optical modeling and performance analysis, helping evaluate complex system requirements at this early stage. These efforts are paving the way toward the Mission Concept Review—and bringing us closer to answering: Are we alone? 🔗 Read the paper: arxiv.org/abs/2602.11046 Figure 55 credit: Liu et al., “Early Architecture Concepts for the Habitable Worlds Observatory,” arXiv:2602.11046, 2026. #CODEV #opticaldesign #opticalengineering #Keysight #OpenAccess #Article

𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 2026: 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭‑𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐀𝐃 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Designing photonic devices often means iterating on geometry until performance targets are met. In RSoft 2026, the Topology Optimizer takes a different approach by starting from the target specification itself. Topology Optimizer is a freeform inverse design tool built directly into the RSoft CAD environment. It automatically generates material layouts or geometries that achieve a defined performance objective, without requiring designers to begin from pre‑defined shapes. Within the layout, you can: • Tag the optimization region (optreg = 1) • Enable binarization and design‑rule checks, such as a 50 nm line‑width constraint • Define the test objective, for example equal power splitting The optimizer runs until convergence, after which you can inspect the final electromagnetic field alongside the full refractive‑index Topology Optimizer in RSoft 2026: target‑driven photonic design inside the CAD environment. ▶️ 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬? #TechPaperThursday #OpenAccess #Article | All‑InP metasurface operating at telecom wavelengths Researchers from Device Technology Laboratories, NTT, Inc. (Japan) demonstrate an all‑indium‑phosphide (InP) polarization‑splitting metasurface operating at 1550 nm. The work shows how InP‑based meta‑optics enable true monolithic integration with III–V photonic devices, avoiding material‑compatibility and assembly challenges common with silicon metasurfaces. Key technical results: ▪️Nanohole‑based InP polarization‑splitting metalens ▪️66.7% measured transmittance ▪️PER: 15.2 dB / 13.1 dB (x/y polarization) ▪️~2.3 µm focal spot diameter The device was inverse‑designed using RSoft MetaOptic Designer, enabling geometry‑level optimization for polarization‑dependent phase and efficiency control—highlighting the role of simulation‑driven workflows in practical meta‑optics design. 🔗 Read the paper: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.358… Figure 2 credit: Ikue Hiraoka et al 2026 Jpn.
