The scale of illegal mining operations in Ile-Ife, Ilesha, Faforiji, Itagunmodi, Atakumosa West, and Obokun has long crossed the line from an economic issue to a critical national security threat. In these areas, syndicates are actively operating with the complicity of local village heads and traditional chiefs who welcome and house them, effectively granting them social immunity and shielding their activities from accountability. This is no longer just a localized problem, as we are witnessing a massive influx of unregulated miners trooping into Osun from Zamfara and other distant states. Historical precedence across West Africa has proven a direct, undeniable link between illicit artisanal mining and the rise of banditry, as the untraceable wealth generated by these illegal pits frequently funds heavy weaponry while the remote, excavated terrains provide perfect tactical cover for criminal hideouts. Meanwhile, the human and environmental toll on the residents of Osun is already devastating. Residents have complained repeatedly about their water bodies being heavily contaminated with lethal chemicals like mercury and cyanide, cutting off safe drinking water while fertile farmlands are being permanently destroyed by unregulated digging. If your administration is truly resolved to guarantee the safety of Osun and stop any security spillover from Oyo State, now is the time to curb these illegal mining activities. Allowing these networks to thrive is sitting on a time bomb waiting to explode, and the state cannot afford to wait for a full scale crisis. The situation in neighboring areas wouldn't have escalated if early warnings and signs were acted upon, and now is the time for Osun to truly step in and act before this organized exploitation spirals completely out of hand.
