@AK22_12 @wizaj Fun fact: cars are consistently in the top 5 of imports every month. And these are definitely not Prados

@wizaj @Khadomire 😂🤣... I dunno who is getting the Forex... but those are the numbers .... My fear is Chinese and Indians probably drain the system. But for some even to buy these cars they use the banks... and sell as if they used black market.

The strangest thing about people referencing a “parallel market” in Malawi is that it doesn’t actually exist. It’s the only market. It’s not parallel to any alternative. We as a country have just decided to pretend our currency is worth twice what it actually is.

@General_wongie Government cannot sustain a defined benefit scheme in the long term. That’s why retired civil servants already struggle to access their pension benefits monthly

The Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF) is a contributory pension scheme for public servants born on 1 January 1982 and after. Pause there cause that date is not accidental. The scheme was introduced around 2010–2011, during the DPP administration.

@Khadomire @bzequity100 that’s an interesting point. i just notice that we are assuming all this gold came from Malawi as a location, i can’t ascertain how accurate that is. our mining is not fully developed to extract the purest gold; this is assuming you can get the best quality in Malawi.

MALAWI'S GOLD SALE: THE $10M QUESTION RBM is selling 590kg of gold for $78M or $132,203/kg. But according to Kitco data of today's gold prices of $150,708.93/kg, that gold is worth $88.9M So why is Malawi's gold being sold at below market value?

@erikchiwala @bzequity100 The difference in price between the highest and lowest forms of purity can be double. And the mining location among other things is what determines purity

@Khadomire @bzequity100 sounds correct. but a discount of 10M dollars? as a central bank, stocking the purest form of gold should be a no brainer.

The problem isn’t exporters. It’s the price of dollars. “🇲🇼Malawian exporters are price takers” — true. “They rely on imported inputs” — also true. But an overvalued exchange rate taxes them — and rations access to FX. Let the kwacha find its market-clearing level — and tighten monetary and fiscal policy: • Kwacha export revenues per dollar rise • Production incentives strengthen • FX access improves (for inputs) Costs rise too. But the current system is worse — it taxes and constrains exporters.
