Governor Dauda Lawal Seeks Transformative Solar Power Deals for Zamfara With High-Level Investment Roundtable with Chinese Energy Giant GCL Group The Executive Governor of Zamfara State; His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal has held a high-level business roundtable with GCL Group, one of China's foremost global energy conglomerates, as part of his ongoing strategic investment and trade mission to the People's Republic of China, a development that signals a major push by the northwestern state to attract transformative foreign direct investment into its renewable energy sector. The meeting, which also included the Governor of Nasarawa State, brought together top executives of GCL Group, a company founded by renowned billionaire entrepreneur Mr. Zhu Gongshan, focused squarely on strengthening economic cooperation between the Chinese energy giant and Nigeria with particular emphasis on unlocking the vast solar energy potential of Zamfara State and accelerating the state's industrialization agenda through sustainable power solutions. GCL Group, which has an impressive track record spanning the entire energy value chain from thermal power generation to cutting-edge renewable technologies has successfully developed and deployed massive energy projects across China and numerous international markets, making it a highly coveted partner for subnational governments seeking to address chronic power deficits and attract private sector investment. During the engagement, GCL Group executives expressed strong interest in investing in large-scale solar energy projects within Zamfara State, signaling a vote of confidence in the Governor's investment-friendly policies and his administration's commitment to creating an enabling environment for foreign capital. The company also indicated a willingness to explore broader strategic partnerships that would extend beyond energy generation to encompass technology transfer, local content development and capacity building for the state's workforce all of which are critical components of the Governor's broader economic development agenda for the state. The discussions were particularly significant given Zamfara State's abundant solar resources, which have remained largely untapped despite their enormous potential to provide reliable, affordable and clean electricity to households, businesses and industries across the state, thereby stimulating economic activity, creating jobs and improving the quality of life for millions of residents. To ensure that the promising discussions translate into concrete and measurable outcomes, both parties agreed to establish a joint technical working group that will immediately begin the process of developing a comprehensive framework for collaboration, including feasibility studies, project structuring, financing mechanisms and regulatory approvals that will be required to bring the proposed solar investments to fruition. The establishment of the working group is seen as a critical first step in moving from dialogue to delivery as it will provide a structured platform for the two sides to address technical, legal and financial issues in a systematic and time-bound manner, thereby minimizing delays and ensuring that the projects are executed to the highest international standards. Following the initial work of the technical group, GCL Group has committed to dispatching an official investment and technical mission to Zamfara State to conduct on-the-ground assessments, engage with local stakeholders and advance the proposed projects toward the implementation phase, a development that has been warmly welcomed by the Governor and his team. The engagement with GCL Group is the latest in a series of strategic international partnerships being pursued by Governor Lawal, who has made it a cornerstone of his administration to position Zamfara State as a preferred destination for global investment capable of delivering lasting economic development and prosperity for the people

PRESS STATEMENT GOV. LAWAL SIGNS HISTORIC EDUCATION REFORM ORDERS, DISTRIBUTES NATIONAL CURRICULUM TO ZAMFARA SCHOOLS Governor Dauda Lawal has signed Executive Orders to establish an integrated governance framework for education financing, school protection, classification, quality assurance, health, and security. The governor on Tuesday also launched the distribution of national curricula to public schools during a meeting with education stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau. A statement by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that the reforms address school governance and operations, school feeding and student welfare, transportation safety, safe schools' implementation, and regulation of graduation ceremonies. He added that further reforms include unified examinations, school health services, merit-based school leadership appointments, inclusive education, and the promotion of STEM, TVET, and digital education. In his remarks, Governor Lawal said education is far more than a social service. He said, "It is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, stimulating economic growth, and preparing future generations to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world. "Today, we are turning that commitment into concrete institutional reforms by signing and presenting these Executive Orders. "These Executive Orders are not isolated directives. Together, they constitute a comprehensive governance framework designed to strengthen school administration, improve accountability, protect public educational assets, enhance financing, promote safety, raise educational standards, improve learning outcomes, and prepare our children for the demands of the twenty-first century." Governor Lawal emphasised that, for many years, education reforms focused primarily on physical infrastructure. While classrooms, laboratories, and learning facilities are important, experience shows that buildings alone do not guarantee quality education. Earlier, Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, said that successful education systems depend on collaboration among governments, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners, and the private sector. "These reforms will not end with policy documents. They will be reflected in safer schools, stronger governance, healthier learners, improved teaching, better educational outcomes and greater public confidence in our education system." SULAIMAN BALA IDRIS Spokesperson for the Zamfara Governor July 22, 2026
