@slbsn It’s not risk free, but he’ll be fine. Local candidate, best option to beat Reform (locally and nationally) - I think there will be a broad range of support for him.

I don’t think Burnham will win Makerfield. Labour’s vote is going to be split in multiple directions. Really doubt Burnham is so popular as to offset that

@TedUrchin @UKLabour You are mostly right but the solution here was Burnham to clearly state, early on, that he promised to serve his term as mayor and will keep it. Starmer still needs to go, there are much better options than Burnham.

I’m not a betting man, but if I was, I’d say Makerfield will vote Reform. I think the mayoralty of Manchester will go to Reform too. Secretly, I almost hope they do. Despite the hype, Burnham is NOT some superman sent to save @UKLabour, far from it. This is going to go horribly wrong, and all because a few spineless wankers couldn’t hold the party line and panicked. I fucking despair. #StandWithStarmer #BackOffBurnham
Andy Burnham@AndyBurnhamGM

I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics. Ten years ago, I decided to leave Westminster. Why? Because, after 16 years, I came to the conclusion that our national political system does not work for areas like ours. I learnt this fighting its failure to invest in the Wigan borough, for justice for the Hillsborough families and against its treatment of Greater Manchester during the pandemic. Over the last decade, I have been challenging this failure from the outside and building a new and better way of doing politics. We have built Greater Manchester into the fastest-growing city-region in the UK and put buses back under public control, introducing a £2 fare cap to help people with cost-of-living pressures. However, there is only so much that can be done from Greater Manchester. Much bigger change is needed at a national level if everyday life is to be made more affordable again. This is why I now seek people’s support to return to Parliament: to bring the change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK and make politics work properly for people. Millions are struggling and they need the Labour Government to succeed. It has already made changes to make life better for them in its first two years. After this week, we owe it to people to come back together as a Labour movement, giving the Prime Minister and the Government the space and stability they need as the by-election takes place. I want to recognise the difficult decision taken by Josh Simons and the sacrifice he and his family are making. I have worked closely with him as Mayor on issues like flooding and illegal waste dumping and have seen first-hand how effective he has been. He has put the communities of Makerfield first, made a real difference for them and should take great pride in that. Finally, I truly do not take a single vote for granted and will work hard to regain the trust of people in the Makerfield constituency, many of whom have long supported our party but lost faith in recent times. We will change Labour for the better and make it a party you can believe in again. ENDS

@2ears2wheels @implausibleblog @peterandann Shocking, isn’t it? And despite what we know about his antics, Gove still has a big media presence. The clearest possible evidence of how compromised and rotten our political system is.

18 straight years of financial doping & 115+ charges pending, spanning more than half of the history of the Premier League (52.9%). Never been done before. History stained & disgraced. Nobody respects City & they know it. A rap sheet that far outweighs their 'achievements', which no amount of money will ever wash away. Congratulations on losing the last two FA Cup Finals though.

@Kid_A_65 @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham Of course, he could be lying his arse off... which would be a very dangerous approach given HMRC know exactly what was paid and when. We won't know until HMRC comment. If they don't, then there were no issues to see.

🚨 Man accuses others of being partisan while he… ✅ Is literally a Labour Party member ✅ Sat on their executive committee And is now trying to turn an error that’s been made by countless businesses, and is easily fixed - into a scandal… …just weeks before the May elections, to help the very party he’s a member of. 😂 You couldn’t make it up.
Dan Neidle@DanNeidle

@LNallalingham Has it been paid? Where does Tice say his offshore trust paid the tax? I’m bored being attacked by partisans when I say things that are inconvenient. Get serious.

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham Tice has been asked to clarify this, but has provided no evidence of how much/when he paid. We know that HMRC was not paid according to the rules, as the liability belonged to his company, rather than him personally. Can you establish that any of this is incorrect?

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham You have stated in this thread that he paid? I agree that he needs to prove this, and that it what Dan Neidle has asked him to do - and he has failed to do. Have you given up defending him?

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham She admitted that she misunderstood the tax treatment and the amount due wasn’t settled appropriately. This is the same as Tice’s position - there is no question that the rules were broken. Sure Tice paid up later, but he won’t disclose how much/at what rate. Curious.

@Kid_A_65 @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham It doesn't need to rule on Rayners guilt. She admitted it. It just needs to decide on the level of fine she receives. The difference being she didn't say the tax.. and he did. Just not from the company account. But it will all come out in the wash.

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham So HMRC hasn’t ruled on either Rayner or Tice. Yet you claim that ‘Rayner deliberately ignored expert advice to dodge tax’, but we should wait to hear from HMRC before judging Tice. Double standards, no?

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham But Tice hasn’t disclosed how much he paid, right? And we know that he got the tax treatment wrong, so how can we be sure that he has paid the right amount? Why hasn’t he cleared this up? Rayner was negligent, but there is no evidence that she deliberately dodged tax.

@Kid_A_65 @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham HMRC received the payment in full... Tice as an individual paid too much. It should have come from the company. Tice has stated that HMRC received payment in full. Rayner deliberately ignored expert advice to dodge tax... and still hasn't paid the full amount owed.

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham Did he pay in full, or pay too much? 🤔 Dan Neidle updated today that Tice hasn’t commented on the amount he paid, and as the payment of tax was handled wrongly, how can we be sure that he got the amount right? Scrutiny is a bummer, right? Just ask Angela Rayner.

@Kid_A_65 @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham Tice has confirmed that he paid HMRC in full. He paid it from a personal account rather than company. If that isn't the case then HMRC will clarify that very quickly. Even Tice isn't stuoid enough to blatantly lie when he is 100% certain to be caught lying.

@northumbrian_ @justdavenow89 @LNallalingham We don’t know that because he hasn’t shared how much he paid. Tice appears to be using off shore arrangements and trusts to ‘manage’ his tax liabilities, and you are on here defending him. Tragic.
