A little update on poor darling Theo, who self admitted here on Saturday with the most horrific wounds to his feet. Both his back feet have been partially degloved. The left foot is down to the bone, and is severely infected. This kind of trauma is consistent with him being caught in a rat trap and being forced to strip the flesh from his feet in order to free himself. Please remember this if you ever hear anyone thinking about placing a rat trap. They are NOT the 'quick painless killers' they claim to be. The rat doesn't conveniently lay his head under the snap bar to break his neck. They are instruments of torture and any animal trapped suffers a slow agonising death, depending on which part of the body is caught. Theo's wounds are very serious and the pain this dear boy suffered in freeing himself and then walking here doesn't bear thinking about. He will need a lot of wound management and will be here for some time, sadly, as this significant damage will take a long time to heal.

This poor sweet boy is Wilford. Discovered out in the daytime at the edge of a pond, where he'd dragged himself to get a drink, then found the pain too much to bear, so was unable to return home. Luckily, the dog walker who found him called one of my 'regular' finders, and this lovely man immediately gave first aid and then brought him here. I suspect Wilford has a broken pelvis. This is a very serious injury, not only because of the breaks to the bones, but because there can be damage to the organs normally protected by the pelvic ring (intestines, bladder, kidneys, etc). Pelvic fractures are usually caused by high speed impact - being kicked, falling from a great height, or (most commonly) being hit by a car. It is sometimes possible for a male hedgehog to recover from a fractured pelvis, depending on the severity of the damage. I won't know that until I can get him x-rayed. For now Wilford is safe and warm, and has plenty of pain medication to keep him comfortable. This time of year these boys are busy travelling great distances, crossing unfamiliar roads, looking for a mate. Please take extra care when driving at night. Being 5 minutes late because you drove slowly is a small price to pay for a precious life.
