Yep. Japan is now reopening its furloughed nuclear plants. In the aftermath of Fukushima closure was almost inevitable, but they've tightened regulation and inspection and realise that they have absolutely no choice given the lack of domestically-controlled energy resources.

@SamHLevey @dandolfa I think that PCE is about 70% of nominal GDP in the US and other rich developed economies? Why not go all the way? Would there be an advantage in targeting just household spending?

@dandolfa Do you believe that the Fed could engineer a specific value for some price index (say, PCE) if it so chose? (Obviously there's an error range, but a narrow one, perhaps arbitrarily narrow.)

Reminder: Theory suggests that tariffs (taxes) alter the structure of relative prices, not the rate of change of the overall price level. Prices of durable goods appear to be increasing relative to other prices. But overall inflation rate holding steady.

No 10 has long said they wanted to appoint heavyweight political facing economics adviser. Feeling was Starmer needed an expert at his shoulder who could also challenge Treasury thinking. Shafik's name has long been in runners & riders: interesting to hear she's been appointed.
Robert Peston@Peston

I understand that former Bank of England deputy governor Minouche Shafik will be joining Keir Starmer’s 10 Downing St team as his chief economic adviser. This is an important appointment, because it will be seen as significantly increasing the authority and expertise of the economic advice the PM will receive

@DominicCaddick @Frances_Coppola @NEF Not sure that the deferred asset approach taken in the US would work in the UK, where BoE is a consolidated subsidiary of HMT in the Whole of Government Accounts.

@Frances_Coppola @NEF I agree! In the blog I reference the deferred asset approach the Fed takes as a way to see this eventually reversed. However, also have an upcoming report talking about how central banks could take on negative equity positions more permanently, if aligned with their mandates

I'm afraid this is horribly wrong. The BoE can't absorb a balance sheet hole by creating money. It needs equity, not cash. Since the BoE is wholly owned by HMG, the responsibility for providing more equity rests with the Treasury and can't be delegated. 1/
NEF@NEF

But we should also ask why the Bank of England, which can create money, even needs to charge the Treasury in the first place, when they could absorb their own losses. neweconomics.org/2025/02/the-ba…

@bbctms Why is the bowler's economy in the Hundred scorecards reported as 6 x runs / balls? Shouldn't it be (a) 5 x runs / balls (ie runs / set ) or (b) runs / balls since the bowler's completed effort is expressed as balls bowled and the match is 100 balls. It's confusing!

@JoeTruzman While Israel thought it had Hamas contained in Gaza, did it want to defeat it? It was a useful enemy (strongman Netanyahu could use the latent threat when campaigning), and knew that Hamas would seek to frustrate any move to a two-state solution which also suited him.

There are some good ideas here. Israel never had a plan in place to destroy Hamas before the October 7 attack. Look what Israel did to Hezbollah and Iran. It went so well for Israel because years of planning went into smashing these enemies. With Hamas, it has been a lot of successes and a lot of failures. Creativity is key to defeating the group, but I think it may be too late to win this battle due to mismanagement and other issues. I am happy to be wrong on this one.
Aizenberg@Aizenberg55

➡️My opinion on next steps for Israel in Gaza. The Gaza war is at a standstill. Hamas has no incentive to negotiate a hostage deal, in fact it is the opposite right now. At the same time Israel’s diplomatic support is eroding, its allies are losing patience and even American support is tenuous. The risks of continuing the war outweigh the benefits. Reservists and regular soldiers also need a break. Reminder: Hamas is at 100% at fault for everything. Nevertheless, here is my opinion of what Israel should do next: ✅Israel publicly declares a unilateral ceasefire. The IDF ends major military operations in Gaza. ✅The IDF remains in place along all of Gaza’s borders and the internal corridors it created, tightly controlling these areas indefinitely. ✅Flood Gaza with food, water, medicine, tents & other humanitarian items — but literally nothing else. Truly unlimited amounts of aid to collapse food prices and remove the financial benefit of hoarding aid. This will reduce or eliminate Hamas’ ability to profit from aid. ✅Announce and strictly enforce: Not one truck of reconstruction materials, literally not a single item beyond basic humanitarian needs, will enter Gaza. Nothing will be rebuilt, nothing will change, all of Gaza will remain frozen indefinitely, until all hostages are released and Hamas relinquishes power. ✅Military action continues mainly defensively: secure the controlled borders and corridors, conduct targeted raids as needed (like in the West Bank), hit rocket launchers, etc. Continue to actively identify and eliminate tunnels. Erode Hamas in a limited and selective manner to avoid civilian casualties. Hamas will not simply be given freedom of movement. ✅Incrementally expand Israel’s control around the borders to deepen and strengthen the buffer zones. Consider annexation of some area of Gaza if Hamas continues to refuse to release hostages. ✅Facilitate voluntary Gazan emigration, but only voluntary. Affirm that anyone who leaves can return, but only once hostages are freed and Hamas is gone. ✅Announce that Israel stands ready to create a brighter future for Gaza, working with international partners. But only once all hostages are released, Hamas relinquishes power, and Gaza is demilitarized sufficiently so it cannot pose a threat to Israel again. Reversal of any annexation action can be considered if a truly peaceful Gaza emerges. ✅While states recognizing a Palestinian state now is absurd and counterproductive, instead of raging against what appears to be inevitable, Israel should find a way to twist this into its advantage. For example, press those recognizing a state to affirm that with a state in hand, the so-called "right of return" can only be to this state. Creativity is needed.

@WUTangKids Not all tariffs to be collected will be due to the increased rates. It's too early to say but July 2025 revenues were $29 billion compared to $8billion in July 2024. What's the impact on consumers if domestic producers raise prices? Cui bono? There may never be a conclusion.

@lewis_goodall I love Japan. NHK has just advised people which it had previously advised to sit on a mountain to switch on their air conditioners to avoid the heatwave. It is "too darn hot" in Japan, but I'm not entirely convinced that this works.

@WorldByWolf @KemiBadenoch @Katie_Lam_MP Remigration is not something the UK can impose on third countries. Apart from the legal issues, it lost the moral argument when it refused to accept the remigration of Begum, then a UK citizen, from Syria.

@WorldByWolf @KemiBadenoch @Katie_Lam_MP Once a migrant has lived in the UK for some period of years they can apply for Permanent Leave to Remain, which may be a path to citizenship (not the same thing). It's up to the government of the day to decide what rights are granted.

Tory MP’s now make much better content and produce much tougher rhetoric than Reform. Once @KemiBadenoch is deposed and the shackles are off the Tory Party will easily outflank Reform ideologically and professionally. @Katie_Lam_MP will play a key role. Remigration is coming.
Katie Lam@Katie_Lam_MP

Most migrants can get Indefinite Leave to Remain after 5 years. It means they can stay here forever. And claim welfare, social housing and free healthcare. Millions of recent migrants didn’t come to work. Giving them ILR will cost us hundreds of billions. We mustn’t do it.
