Just had the most surreal voting experience. Volunteer asked for my name & I said it. She asked me to spell it. We began the rigamarole of me spelling out my “foreign” name. After I spelled out my first name, as I was starting my last name she looked up & said “Wait, the AUTHOR?”

I’m staying in a hotel until I move tomorrow & didn’t get breakfast added to my room b/c I’m usually not up early. I decided to get it today b/c everything’s closed & was getting it added. A woman said her husband didn’t want it today & I could have his. 😭 #RandomActsOfKindness

It's #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and it's worth reading this thread. Being there for someone in a mental health crisis is an act of kindness. Holding space, talking about suicide, and being open can go a long way. Sometimes, being a safe person to talk to can save someone's life.

There are many ways to handle mental health crises that don't involve cops or involuntary psychiatric care. Access to childcare, meals, emergency funds, and affordable medical care can go a long way. Being in a community where people can talk openly about suicidality is huge.
