With Jalen Ramsey now on board, Mike Tomlin isn’t bashful about expectations
Mark Kaboly / Steelers Correspondent
For The @PatMcAfeeShow
PITTSBURGH — Mike Tomlin has never been bashful – it’s just not a trait of his and never will be.
Tomlin pretty much tells you what he thinks without any filter attached and regardless of the consequences that it might have.
Knowing that, the Steelers coach might as well have laid out a blueprint – or at least an outline -- for his new-look secondary after signing free agent Darius Slay and then trading for Jalen Ramsey, as he left little to the imagination.
Since arriving at St. Vincent College for the start of training camp last week, Tomlin hasn’t passed on any opportunity to make it known that the Steelers are going to play man defense with their new-look secondary every chance they get.
Tomlin doesn’t care who knows and actually, hopes they know.
“We are going to play man,” Tomlin said. “That’s what we are going to do.”
And when he says man defense, he means matching up with the league’s best and pretty much telegraphing how they are going to play them without any hesitation.
“This is a coverage league,” Tomlin said. “You need unbelievable depth and talent at the cornerback position, because people have it in their receiver corps. We use a variety of schematics in an effort to minimize passing offenses. You've got to be able to play matchup football, play man-to-man, particularly against the elite and deep groups. The talent we acquired in that position, particularly the cornerback position, allows us to do that in all circumstances.”
And that includes division foe Cincinnati with arguably the best duo in the league in JaMarr Chase and Tee Higgins.
Or, for the matter, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in Minnesota; Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in Miami; Zay Flowers and DeAndre Hopkins in Baltimore; D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze in Chicago; Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams in Detroit.
“When you got guys like Jalen Ramsey and Slay, and JPJ, we can match up and play man to man versus anyone,” Tomlin said.
It’s been a long time coming for Tomlin and the Steelers to get back to what they want to do.
They have been hiding behind false pressures and disguises for years now, as their cornerbacks didn’t have the necessary skills to play lockdown man.
So, the Steelers had to adjust (not very well at times).
With Porter Jr. being a second-round pick two years ago and the free-agent addition of Slay on the first day of the new league year, you could see where the Steelers were heading in terms of scheme.
“Where we move him around and things depend on what offenses are doing,” Tomlin said. “Make no mistake, those Top 3 corners I mentioned, Jalen Ramsey and Slay and Joey Porter Jr., they're going to be on the field. I don't care when offenses come out in.”
But it didn’t all come together until they had a chance to trade for Ramsey in late June. Even though they had to give up a cornerstone piece of their defense with Minkah Fitzpatrick in order to acquire Ramsey, the organization felt like it was something they needed to do to take their new defense scheme to a higher level.
The concept of being a man coverage team, almost to a fault, is something that Tomlin has already briefed his cornerbacks on, and in a Tomlin-like way.
“We have all the guys who love to play, man, and it is a joy to our ears when we hear him talking about that’s what we are going to do,” Porter Jr. said.
With such accomplished man coverage cornerbacks, the Steelers are expecting a trickle-down effect.
There will be limited checkdown opportunities to evade the pass rush.
Having edge rushers like T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, and Jack Sawyer gives the Steelers the chance to lead the league in sacks after a year hiatus.
Last year, they finished 17th in the league – 24 behind league leader Denver.
A lot – if not all – of success will be based on Ramsey.
Ramsey has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league since being drafted by the Jaguars in 2016. He has made seven Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pros, and was part of a Super Bowl champion with the Rams.
“I’m going to play football,” said Ramsey, who talked around his role with the team. “I can’t say that I ever played for a storied franchise before, so this is very exciting,”
The day they acquired Ramsey, the Steelers made it known that he would play multiple positions, including safety. What sounded like something that would just make Ramsey happy might be the key to this all. Ramsey refers to himself as a defensive back, not a cornerback
Throughout the first week of camp, Ramsey has moved around from outside corner to the slot back to safety and even came off the edge on blitzes. Being able to match him up is critical to the Steelers’ success.
“You know, we feel like he can cover anyone, to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said. “He’s a utility back, by which I mean he's versatile. He plays outside, he plays nickel, he plays safety, and that's just a reflection of it. Very versatile and smart, detail veteran.”
Tomlin is in love with what Ramsey will allow his defense to do.
“Get your cameras ready. You're going to see him in a lot of places,” Tomlin said.
Ramsey has made several plays over the first week of camp, including a smooth interception of Aaron Rodgers in the flat during a practice last week. He can tackle and blitz as well.
Despite what his reputation was before arriving in Pittsburgh, former teammate Jonnu Smith called him misunderstood.
Ramsey has been nothing but a leader on and off the field in the week he’s been around his teammates.
“I know how everybody loves to talk about how he can guard every position, but having a corner like that who loves to tackle and is physical is impressive to me,” defensive tackle Cam Heyward said. “He is fitting in nicely.
Make no mistake about it, Ramsey wasn’t acquired to tackle.
He’s with the Steelers to cover.
“Everybody is excited with him here,” cornerback Cory Trice said. “When he says that, you want to show them what you can do. He is a great guy who is showing us the way.”
