Today, I joined the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, SAN, and other key stakeholders at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja to declare open the Stakeholders’ Engagement for the Presentation and Validation of the Reports of the Independent Investigative Panel on Alleged Corruption and Other Violations against the Nigerian Correctional Service. This event was far more than a routine gathering; it marked the successful culmination of our firm commitment to transparency and genuine reform. Exactly 16 months ago, on 24 November 2024, I inaugurated this independent panel in response to serious public allegations that shook confidence in our correctional system. As I often say, without acknowledging the problem, there can be no solution. That is why we set up this panel to strengthen transparency, accountability, and institutional integrity in the Nigerian Correctional Service. As Minister of Interior, I am deeply grateful to the distinguished members of the panel, led by its Chairperson, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, for their diligence, professionalism, and unwavering commitment over the past 16 months. Our Correctional Service must become institutions of reformation, restoration, rehabilitation, and reintegration; not places of torture or suffering. We must also note, every individual in custody retains their fundamental human dignity, regardless of the offence committed. The panel’s findings have exposed serious systemic challenges, including corruption, operational inefficiencies, poor conditions, and human rights concerns. These are issues we must now confront head-on. As the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations within the correctional system. Reform is not only about punishment. It is equally about supporting our officers with better training and welfare, improving operational standards, and implementing non-custodial measures to decongest our facilities. Meanwhile, a significant progress have already been made in our Inmate feeding allowances, which we have improved substantially following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, approval. As I have said, this gathering was not a ceremonial exercise, but a sincere call for collective reflection, honest dialogue, and actionable collaboration. It is therefore our collective responsibility to ensure we build a correctional system that upholds justice, restores hope, and successfully reintegrates offenders as responsible citizens.

On Aunty Esther’s situation: We should start off by admitting something very clear. The members of the public who are upset have a right to be upset. Especially the ones who donated money, they have a right to be upset. Because while aunty Esther has a right to decline blood transfusions which are a medical necessity, the donors have a right to not fund her religious idiosyncrasies especially if it looks like she’s going to end up wasting the public’s money by refusing the ideal best medical care that will save her life. So I agree that people have a right to be upset at her and disappointed. This is true. However on the other hand, I think people should consider that rejecting blood transfusions this is a deeply held religious belief which may be a sensitive issue for her. So I’m sure she’s in a difficult place - saving her life or standing on her religious belief. I want to beg that people should please be patient with her. I would also like to appeal to aunty Esther or anyone close to her, and maybe if possible to also speak to their elders in the JW community. Her situation is a dire and worrying one which needs the best medical care as soon as possible with all hands on deck and nothing being held back due to sentimental reasons. I write this as someone who is deeply and painfully concerned for her like I would for a sister or a family member. If the reports so far are anything to go by, she needs immediate medical care with the best available treatment modalities - and not some modified version tweaked to accommodate religious sentiments (which are likely going to significantly harm and compromise her life in the situation that she currently is in). Yes she can get blood alternatives, but in a desperate medical situation where blood transfusion is recommended, refusing the ideal medical advice and opting for alternative options may turn out to be self-destructive and may lead to catastrophic outcomes which may include death. In other words, the more time is wasted, the higher the risk of a terrible end. I would appeal to the public to please be patient with her, and I would also appeal to her, her family and most importantly her JW elders to please kindly review their position on this blood matter in this exceptional situation. At least to save her life. Surely a religious belief that will make someone insist on the less ideal treatment and make them watch themselves die in a totally preventable manner from a medical condition is one that needs intervention of the elders in that religious movement. In the end, medical doctors will only follow what the patient wants, as long as the patient is deemed to be mentally fit. Even if the patient rejects treatment that can save their life, as long as they are mentally fit and they understand fully the consequences of their actions, doctors have no choice but to respect the patient’s decisions. This is why I’m making an appeal to aunty Esther, her family and her elders in the JW community. Please kindly discuss this issue and if possible come to a resolution that prioritises her life and her survival. It will be a really painful heart-wrenching thing if the efforts, the sacrifices, the donations and the sweats of thousands of people who all came together ends up in sheer futility simply because of a continued resistance to the ideal recommended medical treatment on the basis of religious ideology that may lead to avoidable loss of life. Please I’m appealing again. This is a life and death matter. Kindly reconsider in this situation. And may God help her to survive and overcome this very difficult period. Amen.

Dear Sir, the issue is not just about forcing her to treatment, it’s more about breach of agreement, trust, and misleading the public for reasons best known to her. At the very beginning of this fundraising effort for Aunty Esther, she pledged that she was ready to listen to the advice of the Doctors and stick to it. This was on the backbone of vehemently refusing treatment over 6 months ago. The whole of e-Nigeria swung into action, becoming one of the fastest fundraising efforts ever in this country. The reason - whatever needed to be done must be done to save her life. We are all well aware that cancer treatments WILL include blood transfusions, especially if metastasis has begun to set in, affecting the body’s innate ability to produce red blood cells. Aunty Esther was aware of all these yet tried to have her caregiver lie and deceive those supporting her treatment, and now she’s refusing to cooperate with medical advice, citing religious beliefs, AGAIN. And I believe there are other things she’s done to frustrate this effort in the background that @the_beardedsina and @Wizarab10 may not even want to tell us. It’s very unfair and it’s an absolute abuse on the efforts of the Nigerian people who came through for her. I believe she and her church should take sole responsibility for her actions at this point and let Nigerians focus their attention on the thousands of people who will give everything they have left to have even if it is just 10% of the donation and attention Aunty Esther had for her own health issues. At this moment are 3 cases currently on my list and I will share them shortly. Let’s support those who truly need the support and will follow through with medical care and advice from start to finish. I pray for her recovery and wish her the best. I believe we should all do the same.
