In the early days, we started with Paystack payment integration. Their subscription model made sense for our ajo structure. Cards could be automatically debited once the ajo kicked off, and Paystack handled the subscriptions seamlessly. It was super cool. Our major pain point, however, was the fees. They were simply too expensive. Paystack’s charges ate into the ajo contributions, and we had to cover the difference ourselves. We later moved to Flutterwave. While their fees were more reasonable, their subscription model was not as well structured as Paystack’s. As a result, we built the subscription logic inhouse and used Flutterwave strictly for card charges. The issue of fees still existed. Although less severe, they continued to eat into contributions, and we still absorbed the shortfall. Our priority was always to give customers a great experience, even when it came at a high cost to us. With time, we built our own wallet system and integrated directly with the bank. Today, it simply makes better business sense, and the technology is far more optimal. The picture may look hazy at first, but as long as you keep the big picture in view and build pixel by pixel, it all adds up as you grow.
