I’ll tell you a quick story, and hopefully it explains what’s going on within this fanbase. Some true Real Madrid fans( some of the eventually became cultists) have a sentimental affection towards Vini for a couple of reasons. • They saw him go from being a meme to a good and entertaining player who became part of a team that won the UCL in 21/22 and 23/24. Grass to grace type shii. • Mbappé didn’t arrive early, they gave up on him coming, so they eventually had to make do with Vini who with the help of others somehow filled that void and made them believe he was the next best thing. Now let me explain with an analogy: You know that type of stuff where you pray for a high end Mercedes, but can only afford a regular Toyota. You have to make do with the Toyota because the Mercedes looks beyond reach. Then at some point you have to delude yourself into thinking well “The Toyota gets me to work, i never really needed the Mercedes anyway 😂” Essentially loving the Toyota till it looks like a Mercedes in your eyes. You also platform the Toyota, regularly take it for a wash, detailing, treat it with so much love with the intention of spiting the Mercedes for being out of reach. “Well, look here Mercedes, my Toyota efficiently does some of the things i needed you for”. Mind you, you never stopped secretly watching youtube videos of the Mercedes every night before you slept, you never stopped communicating with the dealership, you never stopped checking the website for when it might become available for a price you could afford. And boom, it does become available and you go for it with all enthusiasm. The Mercedes arrives and at the start it looks like maybe it was just overrated, it’s fast, it’s quick, it’s luxury but the Toyota still serves you like it’s always done. Then suddenly, you begin to drive the Mercedes more and it quickly becomes clear there are levels to this. The Mercedes eventually shows it’s class because of course it’s a Mercedes and a Mercedes is certainly nothing like a Toyota. Suddenly, the Mercedes is now your go to car for everything, the drive to work, grocery store, road trips, and the more you drove it you realised it does everything the Toyota used to do but 10x more and with much more precision, class, and efficiency. You essentially start to drive the Toyota less and rightly so. Here’s where the sentimental sense of affection and loyalty kicks in. “It’s clear to me that the Mercedes is by far the better car, but i can never forget what the Toyota did for me at my lowest. • Now there are people who have always loved the Mercedes for years, people who have always known it’s the better car, people who have continued to desire it even when the Toyota was serving, people who have wanted it over the Toyota for years, people who have watched it grow from a normal Mercedes to a Maybach. There are people whose loyalty is to owner of both cars but still have the car they prefer. There are also people who have no loyalty to the owner of both cars, their loyalty is towards what car they like. Now the fanbase is stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. There’s a division, because while everyone unanimously knows the Mercedes is a better car than the Toyota, a misguided sense of Loyalty has also made some refuse to admit it. PSG signing Mbappe for €180M wasn’t the best thing to happen to the club, letting him leave for free was. Dembele joining PSG wasn’t the best thing to happen to his career, Mbappe leaving PSG was. The worst period of Messi’s career came when he played with Mbappe. Vitinha never got his flowers until Mbappé left. Vini and Jude were considered the two best players in the world before Mbappe arrived, now both are suddenly seen as “not good enough” since his arrival.
