Breaking news High Court Rules in Favour of Julius Malema in Defamation Case Against Ngizwe Mchunu The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled in favour of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema in his defamation lawsuit against cultural activist and former Ukhozi FM presenter Ngizwe Mchunu. The judge found that Mchunu's statements, made during a televised interview and widely shared on social media on 28 April 2026, were unlawful and defamatory. Mchunu had accused Malema of receiving R60 million from Nigerian drug dealers and protecting illegal immigrants, including Nigerians, in exchange for personal financial benefit. He also referred to Malema as someone who "eats imali yamakwerekwere" – a derogatory Zulu phrase implying he profits from money obtained from African foreigners. The court issued an interdict barring Mchunu from repeating the allegations or making similar defamatory statements about Malema. Mchunu has also been ordered to pay Malema's legal costs on a punitive scale. The quantum of damages will be determined at a separate hearing at a later date. Malema's legal team had initially demanded a public retraction, apology, and R1 million in damages within 24 hours of the remarks. Mchunu refused to apologise, leading to the urgent court application. Mchunu, a vocal anti-illegal immigration activist from Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal who has expressed support for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, has not yet publicly commented on the ruling. The case comes amid heightened public debate over immigration in South Africa. The EFF's spokesperson welcomed the judgment, describing it as a victory for accountability in public discourse. No immediate comment was available from Mchunu's representatives. The matter continues, with Mchunu facing a show-cause hearing on 19 May 2026.
