NIGERIAN POWER 🏀🔥🔥
I talk hoops 🏀@trendyhoopstars

Uche Izoje (Syracuse) and Oluchi Okananwa (Maryland) are two of the biggest Nigerian stars in the NCAA Division I landscape right now. Both are projected first-round selections in the 2027 WNBA Draft, and over the next two weeks they will get a taste of WNBA competition when Nigeria’s national team faces Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Indiana. We saw Izoje make her Division I debut this past season for Syracuse, where she averaged (15.6) points, (9.2) rebounds, and (2.6) blocks. She played a major role in Syracuse making the NCAA Tournament after a 12-win season the year before her arrival. The 21-year-old was eligible to declare for this year’s WNBA Draft but chose to return to Syracuse for another season. She is expected to be a top-25 player in the country next season, and if the final seven games of this past year are any indication, she could realistically average 20 points and 10 rebounds. Over these upcoming matchups, she’ll have the opportunity to go up against frontcourt players such as Nneka Ogwumike, Dearica Hamby, Natasha Howard, and Aliyah Boston—experience that could be valuable as she continues to develop. Meanwhile, Okananwa is coming off a junior season with Maryland in which she recorded career highs in points (17.8), assists (2.0), and steals (2.2). She’ll return to College Park for her final season alongside Addi Mack and one of the top transfers in the country, Nunu Agara. Maryland will also welcome back Bri McDaniel, who missed all of last season, while adding two incoming top-50 recruits in No. 8 Jordyn Jackson and No. 45 Mimi Thiero. It would not be surprising if head coach Brenda Frese adds another transfer or two to strengthen the roster around the 5'10 guard. These games will give Okananwa the opportunity to face WNBA-level guard play. One area that could elevate her game even further is developing a consistent three-point shot, something that could help her sustain success for a long time at the professional level. ✨
