🛡️ What condoms prevent
Using condoms (external/male or internal/female condoms) is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk during sex.
They help prevent:
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Syphilis,Some protection against skin-to-skin infections like Human papillomavirus and Herpes simplex virus (though not 100% because those can spread via skin contact outside the covered area) Unintended pregnancy
They work by creating a physical barrier that blocks semen, vaginal fluids, and blood from being exchanged.
⚠️ Harms of unprotected sex & fluid exchange
When protection isn’t used, several risks increase:
1. Transmission of infections
Unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex can transmit:
Viruses (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B)
Bacteria (e.g., Gonorrhea, Chlamydia)
Parasites (e.g., Trichomoniasis)
These spread through semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and sometimes skin contact.
2. Long-term health complications
Untreated STIs can lead to:
Infertility
Chronic pain
Organ damage (e.g., liver issues with hepatitis)
Increased risk of cancer (e.g., HPV-related cancers)
3. Higher risk with certain practices
Anal sex (more tissue tearing → higher transmission risk)
Multiple partners without testing
Presence of sores or cuts (entry points for infection)
🧠 How to prevent harmful diseases through sex
1. Use condoms consistently and correctly
Every time, from start to finish
Use water-based or silicone-based lubricants to prevent breakage
2. Get tested regularly
Know your status and your partner’s status
Many STIs show no symptoms
3. Vaccination
Vaccines are available for Human papillomavirus and Hepatitis B
4. Limit fluid exposure
Avoid direct contact with semen, blood, or vaginal fluids
Use barriers for oral sex (condoms or dental dams)
5. Consider preventive medication
For people at higher risk of HIV, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) can significantly reduce risk
6. Communication and consent
Talk openly with partners about sexual history and protection
Mutual responsibility matters
🧩 “The art” of safer sex
Think of safer sex as a mix of:
Awareness (knowing risks)
Preparation (having protection ready)
Consistency (using protection every time)
Respect (for yourself and your partner)
