People seem to forget that faceless content creators have been around since the beginning of the internet.
Gaming, animation, commentary, music, etc all have faceless creators within them. This isn't a new concept at all. We're just lucky to be in a day and age where you can have a fun character to stand in for you.
It has nothing to do with "hiding behind the model." For a lot of creators, it's a safety net for their privacy and, a good portion of time, it's just fun. People are allowed to have fun and enjoy a little whimsy in their life by using a character to represent themself.
To insinuate that a Vtuber model is the only reason why people would love certain creators is to deny all the success other faceless creators have garnered for themselves along with their fans' dedication to them.
Imagine applying this logic to Daft Punk considering how much of an impact their music has had.
