For a side who are usually so ridiculously clinical, Bayern kinda bottled it. Yes, Neuer made loads of saves, but most were very low%. Bayern created enough CLEAR goal-scoring chances to have scored about 5. 1-2 honestly seems like a good result for Madrid.

@NealGardner_ From the past few years, if evenly matched, all I see is an outstanding performance from the goalie that wins you the Champions.

What does it take to win the champions league? For me, aside from the obvious baseline of cohesion and quality - individual and collective - I think what can *really* seperate the good from the great is specialists. I’m referring to profiles who can come in and do a very specific job. 1v1 specialists to disrupt blocks; Runners to exploit high lines; Aerial threats to dominate both boxes in later game-states. And so on. These ‘specialists’ don’t necessarily need to be world beaters in the conventional sense, but they do need to cater to very specific utilities in very specific situations. In this case, one-dimensionality isn’t frowned upon, it’s welcomed. The reason I bring this up is because I push back against squad building that vastly (and I’d argue unreasonably) prioritises a singular utility. As a case study, people talk about Arsenal being a very well constructed squad, but I somewhat disagree. The need to continue signing defensive profiles and loading up on physicality when you quite obviously lack difference makers going forward is a flaw, regardless of how successful you’ve been. And frankly, that’s quite possibly cost them two CL titles already. The argument, here, isn’t that you shouldn’t sign to solidify and accommodate an overarching philosophy, of course not. I do, however, think there needs to be a point of diversification - as a supplementary mechanism to aid completeness, that is.
