India’s maritime vision is entering a decisive new phase with the Great Nicobar Project—a transformative initiative designed to position Great Nicobar as a strategic gateway in the Indo-Pacific. Anchored just about 40 nautical miles from the East–West international shipping corridor, the project aims to significantly reduce India’s dependence on foreign transshipment hubs while strengthening national security and maritime capabilities. It reflects a calibrated approach where economic ambition aligns with strategic foresight. At its core, the project integrates world-class infrastructure: A 14.2 MTEU International Container Transshipment Terminal, enabling India to capture a larger share of global maritime trade A Greenfield International Airport with a capacity of 4,000 peak-hour passengers A 450 MVA gas–solar hybrid power plant, ensuring sustainable and resilient energy supply A planned township, designed to support economic activity and human capital What sets this initiative apart is its emphasis on responsible and regulated development. The project has been cleared under the EIA Notification, 2006 and ICRZ Notification, 2019, with 42 stringent compliance conditions. Forest diversion is limited to about 1.82% of the island’s total forest cover, complemented by compensatory afforestation over 97.30 sq. km, ensuring ecological balance remains a priority. Equally important is the focus on inclusive development. The project safeguards the interests of indigenous communities, with no displacement proposed for the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes. In fact, through re-notification measures, there is a net increase in the notified tribal reserve area, reinforcing the commitment to cultural preservation and community welfare. The Great Nicobar Project is not just infrastructure—it is a statement of intent.
