@fantasyfooty Well books never said Snape is white as well, so… pale skin does not mean white by default

I'm not against Snape being black in the new Harry Potter series. I'm not against it on principle. There are obviously some pretty awful things and memes being said/shared that are clearly just racist. But it isn't necessarily racist to be a bit annoyed the character has been changed from the book's description, because his appearance carries meaning. 1. Snape is specifically and deliberately described as having "sallow skin" and being "pale." It mirrors the same pale complexion Voldemort has, which is partly why Snape always feels suspicious. They're designed as visual inversions of each other: Snape has a big hooked nose, Voldemort has a flat snakelike one. The whole point of Snape is that he LOOKS like the villain. Everything about his physical description screams untrustworthy. That's Rowling's deliberate misdirection, teaching readers not to judge by appearances. Change the appearance, you risk losing the power of that twist. 2. There's also an irony nobody seems to be talking about. By making Snape the suspicious, untrustworthy, seemingly villainous character AND the only prominent black actor in the cast, you've actually created the exact optics you were presumably trying to avoid. The one black guy is the one everyone's supposed to distrust? How is that progressive? 3. People are making a false equivalence with Hermione being black in the Cursed Child. That's completely fine because the books never say she's white in the text, and it doesn't affect her story either way. Snape's appearance is different. It's written into the plot. 4. The writers now have a real issue down the line. How are they going to portray Snape being bullied when younger? How are they going to portray James Potter suspending Snape upside down with Levicorpus? Surely they aren't going to force racist undertones onto Lupin, Potter, Black and Pettigrew? PLEASE do not turn this into some politically driven TV series where the Marauders' cruelty becomes a racial storyline. That would ruin both Snape AND James.

@aakashgupta It’s obvious why it’s a mistake to cast Paapa Essiedu as Snape but you just refuse to acknowledge this. Maybe the show will still be great, but maybe it won’t. Warner Bros is taking an unnecessary gamble with this decision. There was an obvious choice and that’s Adam Driver.

HBO is spending $100 million per episode to reboot Harry Potter. That’s more per episode than the average Harry Potter film cost to produce. Seven seasons. 56 episodes. A potential $5.6 billion total production budget. Paapa Essiedu signed a 10-year contract for this role. He’ll be 45 when it’s finished. He’s receiving death threats on Instagram. People telling him to quit or they’ll kill him. His response: “The abuse fuels me.” Here’s what the people sending those messages don’t understand about how this actually works. The original eight Harry Potter films grossed $7.7 billion at the box office on a combined $1.2 billion production budget. That’s a 6.4x return before merchandising, theme parks, and streaming revenue. Warner Bros. is spending $100M per episode because the Wizarding World generates roughly $2 billion per year across all revenue streams, and they need a new content engine to keep that machine running for the next decade. Essiedu was one of the first actors attached to this project. Emmy and BAFTA nominee from I May Destroy You. Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy across all eight films, called the backlash what it is: racism. The casting controversy has generated more press coverage for this show than any marketing campaign could buy. Every article about the death threats includes the trailer link. Every outrage tweet puts the show back in people’s timelines. 13M views on this single tweet are proof. Warner Bros. has run this playbook before. The internet raged when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker. When Daniel Craig was cast as Bond. When Michael Keaton was cast as Batman. Each of those performances became the definitive version of the character. Essiedu grew up reading these books at a local library because his mom couldn’t afford a babysitter. Now he’s anchoring the most expensive TV series ever produced. The people threatening him over Instagram DMs are going to watch the show anyway. That’s the part they’ll never admit.

The movie was so good that even Dhruv Rathee of movie reviewers had to say as many positives as possible to avoid backlash. It was nowhere close to the praise he gave to Jawan, Pathaan, etc. This guy is pretty smart for a woke reviewer. He tries to sugarcoat things as much as possible. He very cleverly presents himself as neutral. Also, he deletes all the comments criticizing his review and countering him with facts.

Do Muslims really use black magic or similar practices to lure Hindu girls? Does black magic even exist? Or is this just something people say to avoid accountability?

A woman's child went to her neighbour's yard when she saw a bicycle. Her mother came behind her. She let her play for a few minutes and then took her back. The comments are full of racism on the video. If she stole it or did anything wrong, then it wouldn't be good. But she just let her child play for a while. This is how they treat Indians. Meanwhile, Indians invite unknown foreign tourists to their homes and offer them free food. This shows the difference in how they treat Indians vs how Indians treat them.
