I have these conversations in 1:1s with personal clients. We explore their North Stars through a process I call personal invisionaries (adopted term from my own mentor) honest ideation that doesn’t wear a mask. One of them said it best with a metaphor I now carry with me: It’s an investment of deposits The time, energy, and presence you give They’re deposits into the people and priorities you care about most And when life hits hard You need to borrow on what you’ve built The peers you’ve surrounded yourself with The grace you’ve offered The hours you gave with no ask in return Those are what allow you to withdraw when you’re in a pinch But here’s the catch If your “bank”—the people, the partnerships, the systems around you Won’t let you lean in with ease when it’s your turn to need You might need a different bank

This is my flex. (I help kids earn their technology badge) The problem with the growing technology industry is that the No Child Left Behind Act led public education systems to provide every student with a device—whether a laptop or tablet. To supply these devices, schools initiated a bidding process, and Microsoft ultimately won the contract. As a result, nearly every school-issued computer runs Windows and is locked into proprietary ecosystems, often with restricted access to open-source alternatives. This setup means that students interact with technology in a controlled, user-friendly environment, but they don’t gain an understanding of how computers actually work. They are handed fully functional systems but are rarely encouraged to explore the underlying hardware, operating systems, or software development processes. This lack of exposure stifles creativity and problem-solving skills. In contrast, previous generations had access to older, more customizable machines where experimentation was encouraged—whether through modifying settings, troubleshooting issues, or even building computers from spare parts. Just like learning to maintain their first car, students should have opportunities to tinker with computers—learning how to repair, modify, and optimize them. To do this effectively, they need access to an expendable or “scrapper” machine, one they can take apart, experiment with, and even break without consequences. Without this kind of hands-on learning, students remain passive technology users rather than active creators and innovators.

“The root of it really is to take down men, because conservative women—homemakers, we depend on our men to provide for us and ultimately if you can get the women out of the house, you don’t need strong men anymore, and we need our strong men.” California political activist & mom @PURPLEP8RIOT argues the CIA’s effort to label conservative women as violent extremists serves to destroy the nuclear family.
