A virus or some other pathogen emerges somewhere in the world. The media shifts into apocalyptic mode. "Experts" appear to be predicting catastrophe. Computer models project millions dead, if the right circumstances coalesce. Politicians declare emergencies. Pharmaceutical companies announce new products.
