Sometimes I get really tired of the drama in the VRChat space. Nothing makes me want to permanently log off faster than hearing “did you hear about (insert name)? You should avoid them” Anything you do can turn into drama that gets passed from lobby to lobby. Suddenly you’re a terrible person because you had a bad friend group who treated you poorly and shit talked you. It takes a single person to make up lies with no evidence for a bunch of people to have a negative opinion of you. A negative opinion you can do nothing about because everyone is sneaking around “warning” each other about people they don’t like. Don’t even bother trying to clear anything up. Then YOU are the one starting drama. The reality? People will hate you and others around you for no reason. They don’t need to have evidence to dislike you. They made their decision the moment they had a negative emotion toward you. It sucks. Because in a space heavily reliant on vetting each other and ensuring there’s no bad actors in order to keep a space safe, we let the worst actors dictate who is safe. So I can’t help but be standoffish nowadays. I regret ever opening up to anyone when I first started 8 months ago. Some of my worst experiences to date came from trusting people who “just want to help”. Nowadays I take “be careful of (insert name)” way less seriously. Not because I don’t trust the people who warn me about others or because I think they’re lying. Just because I know how quickly a small disagreement can turn someone into enemy number one of the week or the source of gossip. I trust my friends. But I don’t trust my own judgement of others’ character. And I think many people could learn to trust gossip a little less. Just get to know the person, dude. It’s never that deep. So again, I’m sorry if I’m standoffish. I just don’t want to hear another “be careful of (insert name)” ever again. Half of y’all be lying AND believing the lies.
