The Enlightenment did not reach Islam and it has not undergone any reform on a mass scale. Muslims who are pro-Western and assimilate successfully do privately modernize their faith. But there are huge groups of Muslims that do not. They follow the 7th century teachings literally - with no apology for the Quranic calls to conquest, convert, or for violence. These are the Islamists.
