It is remarkable how some irritable souls, after enduring the full fury and torment of prolonged, violent anger, emerge softened--silky, meek, and peaceable, as the saying goes. The same holds true for the other passions. The Lord Himself has shown that their punishment lies within: in the very agony they inflict. Pride, envy, hatred, avarice, and covetousness all punish in this way. Each passion is at once its own tormentor and the executioner of the person it possesses.
