@adamtranter I recently bought a “beach wagon” to take all our beach paraphernalia (camping chairs, towels, wet suits, bucket and spades etc) onto the sands. It has quite a large capacity and it occurred to me that it could be brilliant for a big shop on foot! Might be considered cooler too!

As The Guardian wrote, what used to be seen as “nanna glamour” is now quietly going mainstream; helped along by good design and the realities of urban living. But let’s be honest: they could do with a better name. theguardian.com/money/2024/apr…

Cities need better mobility solutions. And sometimes, the most effective ones have been in front of us (or indeed, behind us) for decades. This one is affordable, usually has two wheels… but it’s not a bicycle. 🧵

@Bikery1966 @RibbleCycles Lovely bike. I have a Ribble CGR Ti and love it - great for commuting, even along the slightly uneven Thames Path in Weybridge!

First ride off-road on the Ribble Allroad Ti Sport. It’s equally at home on dry hard packed bridleways and rough tarmac of the Yorkshire roads and gave a comfortable ride on both. You would need to fit more appropriate tyres for loose gravel or wet trails.

Speed cameras save lives but many local authorities can’t afford to operate them because 100% of fines go straight to the Treasury. Local authorities should at least be able to retain enough of the revenue to cover the overheads of running schemes. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@adamtranter We are installing more average speed cameras in Surrey - they make such a difference👍

@adamtranter Understood- my experience in Surrey and knowledge of examples elsewhere is that the fees from speed awareness courses more than cover the running costs. Expansion can be paid for out of Local Authority capital budgets too.

@adamtranter There is often a surplus that can be reinvested in road safety too.

@adamtranter Sorry this is wrong. Part of the fee that offenders pay to attend speed awareness courses goes back to the police force and this pays for the running of the police back office. It can be used to pay for the local authority’s costs in camera maintenance too. There

@SurreyRS Great work! Average Speed Cameras are coming soon for this stretch. They will improve compliance with the speed limit and reduce the risk and severity of collisions👍

⚖️COURT RESULT⚖️ On 01/06/2024, during #OpsDownsway, this motorcyclist was observed by #VanguardRST on Reigate Road, Buckland crossing solid white lines on two occasions to overtake other cars, whilst in excess of the speed limit and then failing to notice the unmarked police car with blue flashing lights behind them, for a period of time. The rider was later found Guilty in court on the 24/03/2025, of driving at excess speed and without due care and attention, and issued 5 points and a £300 fine per offence, as well as £90 in costs and £240 in victim surcharge – Totalling 10 penalty points and £930! Op Downsway is Surrey & Sussex Police’s response to anti-social and dangerous use of the roads by motorcyclists, which will be running again for 2025 from April to September. #Fatal5 | #RoadSafety | #RideConsiderately

@BuckCllr @Bikery1966 I am wary of things that make a straight forward piece of infrastructure more complicated.

@BuckCllr @Bikery1966 I’m not convinced that this offers much improved safety. It requires on crossing ped detection and these can go wrong and add more cost and maintenance liability. What happens if they stop working - do drivers assume they have right of way if the poles are not flashing?

🇬🇧Cllr Kevin Buck 🇬🇧
The first 'SafeZebra' automated pedstrian crossing safety device has been fitted in Southend on Sea this week. Patented and IP protected technology, it is designed to significantly improve pedestrian safety at crossings. Automatically activated when a pedestrian goes to step on the crossing, the amber LED strip lights start to flash to warn motorists, whilst the LED flood lights add signinfcant addtional lighting. The device automatically reverts to a passive state after a set time. The automation means the pedestrian does not have to do anything, whilst being extremly energy efficient, as it negates the need for addtional perminant lighting. It will save lives whilst saving energy.

I hosted a reception at York House for two outstanding PCSO’s Maz Regan & Bill Smith who have been honoured with a BEM. Celebrating their service to the community; family, friends, council leader & area Commander DCS Clair Kelland joined in to recognise their service. Well done!
