Merci beaucoup. Not.

Carvilio Ring; a 2000 year old ‘Hologram’ enclosed in a gold jewel : The history of the uniquely designed ring dates back 2000 years. The ring of Titus Carvilius Gemello was found on the finger of a Roman matron, the noble Aebutia Quarta, in so-called Flavio-Trajanic Tomb, now known as “Hypogeum of Garlands”. It is one of the most interesting artifacts of the last 20 years has been unearthed near Grottaferrata, on southeastern outskirts of Rome, in a private area where various renovation works have been carried out. During excavations, a sealed stone door was found, with two marble sarcophagi behind it. The underground chapel contained two marble sarcophagi of excellent workmanship with relief decorations, inscribed with the names of the two deceased; The first had the inscription "Carvilio Gemello" and the second the inscription "Aebutia Quarta", mother and son. The remains of the bodies were in surprisingly good condition thanks to embalming, suggesting that the burial was not in Roman tradition, but in the Egyptian cult of Isis, which was very popular in Rome at the time. The remains of Carvilio became known as the 'Mummy of Rome’. Carvilio’s body was wrapped in a shroud and completely covered with flowers; large garlands in good condition covered the upper half of the body, one of which was placed around the head. His femur was found fractured in two places, moreover, a high percentage of arsenic in the hair was found, so that regarding the circumstances of his death both septicemia due to an injury or a fall from a horse, and poisoning were hypothesized. The young Carvilio died at the age of 18, the causes of his death have not yet been determined, but it could be a post-fracture infection or even poisoning because a large amount of arsenic was found when his hair was analyzed. His mother, Aebutia’s body was barely perceptible because it was covered with a vegetal mantle made up of hundreds of small garlands; on the head was placed a well preserved wig, wrapped in a net woven with double fine gold thread ending in a braid. Aebutia, may have been 40 to 45 years old when she died, she may have been a wealthy aristocratic lady. She wore a silk robe and an expensive red wig woven with gold threads, and a unique gold ring in her finger, with a cabochon-worked rock crystal bezel, through convex upper surface of which bust of a male figure finely executed on a micro-relief sheet is visible. The gold socket shows a miniature hologram-like portrait depicting the lady’s son Carvilio Gemello, with wavy hair, intense eyes, delicate lips. The portrait is covered with crystals that give timeless depth to the boy’s facial expression. The luminous effect of the crystal lens gives a mysterious depth to the image of the deceased. It seems that, following the loss of his beloved son, Aebutia presumably had the precious gold ring made to keep his memory alive. Carvilio’s ring, which was separated from its owner after millennia, is now on display at the Palestrina Archaeological Museum. His gaze, protected by the brightness of a quartz window, continues to mysteriously examine the passage of time. The extraordinary workmanship and beauty, despite the information gathered to this day, hides many secrets. #archaeohistories
