@IveMarx Yep. En de telefoontjes kwamen wellicht eerder van Yves Verschueren (essencia) dan van Putin ;)

Er was een tijd dat deze mens veel grappiger was.
(En in die tijd was hij héél grappig.)
John Cleese@JohnCleese
It only took one phone call from Putin, didn't it ?

@robbertleusink Well, jenever likely emerged gradually in the Southern Low Countries (currently Belgium) as a medicinal-distillation product before becoming a recreational drink. The attribution to attributed to Franciscus Sylvius is a myth. The Bols family has roots in Antwerp.
English

The Dutch invented jenever in the 16th century
English soldiers discovered it fighting alongside the Dutch in the Eighty Years' War.
They called it Dutch Courage
Then they tried to make it at home
But tThey couldn't replicate the malt wine base...
So they used cheap grain spirit instead, masked the taste with botanicals, and called it 'gin'
The British called it theirs

@PedderSophie I thought of ‘Muselier’. Émile Muselier (1882–1965) was the first senior officer to rally to Charles de Gaulle in 1940 after France’s defeat and became commander of the Free French Naval Forces (FNFL). ‘France Libre’ is even better.

After the Iraq Invasion, George W. Bush stopped playing golf
He said he didn’t want “some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf”

"So Britain has nothing in the Gulf. The French are in a position to do a lot more because, surprise, surprise, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚'𝒗𝒆 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔"

It was 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 Johnson & (latter-day) May who, whilst spending a decade banging on about "sovereignty" over yoghurt additives, decommissioned Royal Navy minehunters such as HMS Chiddingfold from the Gulf
France, with its ships - and its sovereignty - is still in the EU

My generation had its criticisms of US journalism, but we always thought it was the freest in the world. Now? “FCC chair threatens to throttle news broadcasts over ‘hoaxes’ about Iran war
Brendan Carr posts that he may cancel spectrum permits of ‘mainstream news’ outlets for ‘misleading’ coverage”. Appalling.

@IveMarx Ook interessant: In “The Moynihan Report and the Politics of Controversy” analyseerde Rainwater (met Yancey) hoe een beleidsgerichte sociaalwetenschappelijke analyse werd aangevallen, verdedigd en uiteindelijk getransformeerd zodra het in de publieke controverse terechtkwam.
Nederlands

@IveMarx Het waren vooral sociaal-filosofen. Hun klemtoon lag op kritisch analyseren. Ze hadden wel oog voor empirisch onderzoek, maar dat was duidelijk niet hun sterkte. Heel verschillend van de Amerikaanse sociologie in die tijd (Lazarsfeld enz.)
