I am overjoyed by the adoption by the UN Gerneral Assembly of the resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity. The process of its realisation, from idea to reality, was made possible by the solidarity of people of good conscience around the world and led by the active coalition of the African Union, CARICOM and other groups. I cannot think of a better way to honour our forebears on the day of remembrance than to have the majority of the world’s countries affirm that the trafficking and enslavement of nearly 13 million human beings is, indeed, the gravest crime against humanity. One of those forebears, François-Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture, who was born into slavery but became one of the architects of Haiti's liberation, the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean, said: “The greatest weapon against oppression is unity.” We must stand united in seeking the restoration of the humanity and dignity of our forbears who were enslaved and sold. #RememberingSlavery

President John Dramani Mahama joined the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, and the Muslim community at the Black Star Square for Eid ul-Fitr prayers, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. In his address, the President underscored that Eid represents not only a moment of celebration but also a call to sustain the values of discipline, sacrifice, and compassion cultivated during Ramadan. He urged Ghanaians to carry forward the spirit of the holy month in their daily interactions, promoting unity, tolerance, and mutual respect. President Mahama reaffirmed government’s commitment to inclusive national development, emphasizing that efforts are being made to ensure that progress reaches every part of the country. He noted that national development requires a shared responsibility between government and citizens. Highlighting Ghana’s long-standing tradition of religious harmony, the President described the nation as a shining example of peaceful coexistence and called on all citizens to safeguard this unity by rejecting division and fostering national cohesion. The National Chief Imam commended the President for his leadership and fulfillment of commitments to the Ghanaian people, and offered prayers for his continued strength, wisdom, and success. He further called on all government appointees to support the President in advancing policies aimed at improving the lives of citizens. The President also extended his warm wishes to all Muslims in Ghana on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr and prayed for continued peace, stability, and prosperity for the nation. #MahamaThePresident #EidMubarak

I received a special gift of the UN Charter in all six official languages from UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Addis Ababa today. It is a powerful symbol of our shared commitment to multilateralism, peace, and international cooperation. It also reflects a meaningful gesture and the UN's continued partnership with Africa and Ghana. Our discussions centred on critical issues facing our continent, particularly the security challenges in Africa and the Sahel, as well as the imperative to consolidate democracy across Africa. We also discussed regional peace initiatives, including the instability in the AES countries. I am grateful for the Secretary General's assurance of UN support as we prepare to assume the AU chairmanship in 2027.

Earlier today, I received the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonnie, who paid a courtesy call accompanied by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, the Acting Director of the Ghana School of Law, Prof. Raymond Atuguba, and the Judicial Secretary. The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, was also present. The Chief Justice indicated that the visit was to express appreciation for the Ministry of Finance’s support to the Judiciary. He underscored congestion in the courts as a major constraint to effective justice delivery and outlined a range of solutions currently in the pipeline to address this challenge. He also highlighted concerns regarding the working conditions of the Judiciary. I am committed to working closely with the Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice to tackle these challenges. As part of the measures under consideration, I am examining the possibility of allowing the Judiciary to utilise 100 percent of its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to address pressing operational needs.
