Around 12.5 million Africans were embarked from West and Central Africa for the transatlantic slave trade between 1501 and 1866 (per the Slave Voyages database). Virtually all were captured by other Africans during wars, raids, or as criminals/punishments within existing African slavery systems, then sold by local kings, merchants, and elites (e.g., Dahomey, Ashanti) to European buyers at coastal forts for guns, cloth, and goods. These African suppliers profited greatly, expanding pre-existing intra-African slave markets.
