@leannaarch Thank you. My kid has straight A’s, is taking honors and AP classes, and goes to school in pain because they don’t feel like they can miss any more school. It’s maddening what schools do to kids.

School Attendance Policies Do Not Work For Children With Chronic Illnesses

Now excuse me while I go fight our insurance who refuse to pay for migraine medicine in 2023 for this child even though they paid for it for the last 18 months. Without meds, my child will be out of school even more days.

Btw - child has a 504 plan that specifically states unlimited medical absences can be excused. Can you imagine if this child didn’t have a parent who could navigate the system? I can and I still have a wee bit of fear.

Re. Exhibit C: lest you think letter isn’t actually threatening, it throws in the Dept of Juvenile Justice and the Dept of Social Services as potential actions if I don’t have a conference with principal. I’m a professor of educational leadership and I feel threatened.

Exhibit C: child was out for major surgery. Missed three days = 12 absences. Parent submits excuse from the HOSPITAL on first day back. Gets threatening letter in mail one week after. Front office says it takes 2 weeks to update paperwork.
