The beautiful thing about cartography is the unique mix of art and science. At Koordinates, we handle both. We all know that maps need to be precise to do their job, which is why we solve the problem of authoritative data distribution. You can’t generate better maps without accurate, up-to-date data. But great maps also need to communicate with their audience. Cartographers make important creative decisions to help their audience effectively engage with their maps. This is why we’ve built out an increasing number of cartographic controls into the Koordinates Map Viewer. At its most simple, every vector layer can be assigned a custom colour and transparency with a click or two, allowing all users to build their own maps. For more complex layer styling, we also support custom tile sets per layer using CartoCSS.

Coming soon to Koordinates: Shared Map Viewers that change how you view, share and explore data. Here is what you need to know: 1/ Maps on Koordinates can now be saved and shared publicly, with a group, or via a URL, just like datasets. Shared Maps have a static URL that can be published (and won’t change!) 2/ Shared maps can be found as a datatype in the Koordinates data browser. This means your saved maps can be easily discovered by colleagues and collaborators. 3/ Koordinates supports a growing range of styling and cartographic options, including customisable 3D settings. 4/ Shared Maps open in immersive, clean, full-browser map mode. 5/ And — as you might have guessed — data in a map viewer can be easily exported in any projection or format (including DWG). Check out the video below to see how they work. Could this change how you deliver and share your geospatial data with teams, stakeholders or the public? Get in touch for an advanced preview.

Exciting update: Koordinates will soon offer Esri REST services for geospatial data. This means that data stored in Koordinates can be used via Esri REST Map and Feature services — immediately and at scale. Your colleagues, collaborators, or wider Esri user base can start getting much more value from your geospatial data, without any licensing worries or IT blockers. Of course, this complements our existing range of APIs and web services, including the Koordinates Query API, OGC WFS and WMTS. Could this change how you deliver and share your geospatial data with teams, stakeholders or the public? Get in touch for an advanced preview!

To get the most value from geospatial data, you need three things: 1/ A 3D map viewer that supports the visualisation of vector, raster, grid, and point cloud data. This needs to be usable by everyone, not just GIS professionals. The data should be easily queried with a click and have customisable styling. And anyone should be able to make and share a map of the data for their own projects. 2/ An export service that supports a broad range of formats and projections. It’s wild to think that some people still share data via generic file-sharing services like Dropbox or only provide links to a single format and projection. It’s 2024 — we need to stop outsourcing this to our end users. It’s extremely inefficient. And there’s a better way. With Koordinates, you can crop data to your chosen extent, export multiple datasets at a time, choose the projection you need and pick your format (including DWG). 3/ Services to get data directly into GIS (or other) software. We’ll talk more about this in future posts, but GIS professionals need to get data from where it’s stored into their software without exporting it each and every time. That’s why we support OGC web services, cloning and — coming soon — ArcGIS REST services.

Exciting news: Soon, you’ll be able to view and explore point clouds in Koordinates Map Viewer, before exporting as DWG (and other formats). Why did we build this? Businesses are collecting an enormous amount of highly valuable point cloud data. The problem is that they struggle to distribute it in the format, projection, and extent users actually want. After all, GIS systems aren’t built for sharing point cloud data, and generic file-sharing software doesn’t support geospatial preview and translation. With Koordinates, point cloud data can be stored, viewed, managed, and shared alongside other geospatial data. This means users can visualise and explore point cloud data in the browser, right next to aerial imagery and vector data. We’ll be launching this feature soon — but if you want early access, get in touch for a demo.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve rolled out 3D map viewers to all Koordinates sites! Now, users of our customers’ sites can simply click the ‘3D’ option in the top left of the map viewer, and start exploring their geospatial data in true context — just like our own Jonathan Ball in the video below, who got a bit distracted exploring building outlines and roads in New Zealand’s South Island.* Want to experience this for your own data? Here’s how it works: 1/ Import your vector, raster, point cloud or grid data into Koordinates. 2/ Invite your collaborators. 3/ Customise layer style, transparency, and hierarchy to visualise the data. 4/ View and query the data in full screen and 3D, with access to the full data table. 5/ Finally, name and share the 3D map viewer with anyone. * For those following along at home, Jonathan starts off going up the Waitaki River to Benmore Hydro Station, then the Pukaki River into Lake Pukaki, zooming into the Hermitage before flying over Aoraki/Mt Cook.

How does WSP get accurate and up-to-date geospatial data to the people who need it? We chatted with Ryan MacVeigh and Damien Cutcliffe to learn how they solve this problem with Koordinates. 3 takeaways 👇 1/ 3D digital twins are extremely useful — but pose novel data management challenges. Common solutions in the industry, including legacy GIS, don’t easily scale. And building bespoke solutions from scratch is a lot more expensive. This is why Koordinates has been a great solution. “Digital twins use a lot of data, and that’s where Koordinates shines. I like the automated ingestion workflows, the on-the-fly projections, the clip-and-ship workflow. It’s also great that it automatically creates API endpoints by just simply presenting the data to the platform.” 2/ Koordinates + Kart’s distributed version control solves a major problem with geospatial data. “Kart is a very novel and unique proposition within the GIS ecosystem. It’s unique to Koordinates, and something that the geospatial community has needed for a very long time. Kart allows us to manage data in an effective way — and not just any data, but data that is consistently changing,” Ryan says. “With Kart, we don’t need to worry about creating copies and backups all the time. You can quickly see those change histories, roll back if necessary, and make decisions on how things have changed. Kart really is a standout piece of the Koordinates offering.” 3/ Great partners are agile, proactive, and emphasise research and development. As Damien says, “Koordinates has been a great strategic partner. They’re incredibly flexible and responsive, and we’ve had an excellent relationship since the beginning. As a product partner, they have the perfect attitude. If a problem comes up, they always work collaboratively to find a way forward.” “The Koordinates team are very passionate about wanting to create something that has high value. It makes the team really easy to work with, a refreshing change amongst vendors that often want to shoehorn their solution into everything.”

To get more value from our geospatial data, we need to make it much easier for everyone to use in their projects, maps, and apps. After all, some people need to export a DWG for a local project. And some need Open Geospatial Consortium web services like WFS for vector data with full attribution — as you can see in the video below. Some people even want a Shapefile. That’s why the Koordinates platform automatically creates all of these options for every geospatial layer imported into the platform. Koordinates gives your users real options, meaning they can start working with data much more quickly. The upshot is less data wrangling and translation, less technical faffing, and much more self-service data access

One of the greatest inefficiencies in GIS? Version control for data. Software developers have enjoyed Git for nearly 2 decades. But too many GIS professionals are still inventing complex & fragile processes to manage their updates. This has meant fewer data updates upstream, and stale project data downstream — with all the risks and inefficiencies that entails. Till now, that is. One of the most exciting problems we’ve solved at Koordinates is distributed version control. Building on Git, we launched @KartForData , an open-source project that is directly integrated into Koordinates. This means that keeping your project data up-to-date has never been easier. Simply download the Koordinates Desktop App and clone (rather than download) your own version of a dataset in Koordinates Cloud. When there’s an update to the authoritative dataset, you’ll get notified in the app. By clicking ‘update’, you can quickly review and merge the changes into your clone repository. This means that you can say goodbye to stale project data — and ditch those fragile processes once and for all....

Hey Steve, Thanks for sharing. We are looking into those 500 errors you mentioned earlier. It should be solved in the near future. The Export API is built for internal use, but we expose it for limited public purposes, hence the limited documentation. Check out apidocs.koordinates.com rather than help.koordinates.com for more up-to-date API documentation. It’s also a work in progress, but it might be more useful.  I’m happy to put you in contact with one of our developers if you get stuck again. Just send a DM, and we will try to help.

The Koordinates Exports API is so maddeningly inconsistent. You might get a "is_valid: false", but never an "is_valid: true" at the top level. At the item level, you might get an "is_valid: true" but only if top level "is_valid: false". None of this documented. All trial&error.
