The main issue is unjustified PR around this, maybe not from Alphabet’s marketing, but because bad news sell better it created unnecessary miscommunication chaos. That computer doesn’t exist, at the moment it’s some relatively small optimization one algorithm (not a real order of magnitude) which shouldn’t change the clock of practical quantum supremacy date

Google research put out a reasonable report on the theoretical quantum threat to Bitcoin. You have to at least accept that there’s a small chance they are right. Instead, most bitcoiners are acting like Google punched their mom in the boob.

Literally nothing changed from that misunderstood Google paper on the expected timelines on when and iff quantum supremacy will ever be possible. Nothing breaks on 2029, nothing

The problem is that hackers don't have quantum computers sitting in their bedrooms. If this turns into a problem, you'll find it onchain first, not a PR from Google.

@scottmelker Nothing changed on the timelines from this Google paper. This is theory guys, not something that we see practical infra possible in the near future. So surprised this was completely missed.

🚨 BITCOIN: ELON MUSK ON GOOGLE QUANTUM THREAT: "IF YOU FORGOT THE PASSWORD TO YOUR WALLET, IT WILL BE ACCESSIBLE IN THE FUTURE" @elonmusk responded to the escalating Google quantum computing debate with his characteristic humor after Max the VC summarized Google's position as: "We've cut the quantum resources needed to break Bitcoin's encryption by 20x. We can now break it. We can prove it. We're just not going to tell you how." Max was quote-tweeting Nic Carter's original thread on Google moving its post-quantum cryptography deadline to 2029. Musk quipped "On the plus side, if you forgot the password to your wallet, it will be accessible in the future" alongside a Grok response estimating the earliest plausible date for cracking ECC-256 (used by Bitcoin and Ethereum) at late 2028-2029 under aggressive scenarios, with conservative consensus pointing to early-to-mid 2030s. An estimated 6.9M BTC (~32% of supply) sits in wallets with exposed public keys. Ethereum has an active post-quantum roadmap. Bitcoin has no coordinated migration plan.

@Polymarket I'm surprised with how community (non cryptography experts) overstate what and why Google actually announced

Come on, no, that number is theoretical. Google cannot experimentally verify a 9-minute Bitcoin attack because the required machine does not exist. What they did is engineering extrapolation, not an empirical test. In short they provided the theory on what quantum capabilities will be required to break BTC in 9 mins, not that they have a machine that does this today. Obviously they used that as an interesting target, the 9-minute number is not a physical limit; it is a design target derived from the Bitcoin threat model, not something fundamental to the algorithm.

I WILL debate w/ Google, that quantum threat poisoning, the way it's described at least, is overstated... really
Ran Neuner@cryptomanran

Google's new quantum computer could kill crypto by 2029. This is coming from Google itself, not a fringe prediction. They've already updated their internal deadline after a breakthrough that made cracking crypto encryption 20x more efficient than previously thought. I'll be live with @Mysten_Labs co-founder and chief cryptographer @kostascrypto to break down what this actually means for your bags. LIVE in 90 MINUTES. [link in comments]

Google is seriously overstating here, unfortunately 🤷‍♂️ IMHO it’s mostly engineering refinement + narrative packaging rather than something new, at least for me and many other scientists. Still good academically as they accumulate quantum impact summary in 1 source of truth paper, but nothing scary here, sorry

IMHO mostly to align with NIST recommendations at this stage. Reality is we have to proactively be prepared Vs there is an immediate threat from near future quantum computers; we’re nowhere close to it yet. Early transition is also giving you some perceptional first mover advantage: a) from (sometimes unjustified, but interesting from the perspective of human evolution and science) obsessed with security claims or investment proposals for quantum tech… b) from the tiny probability that AI (not just human knowledge) will unlock exotic quantum capabilities we cannot predict today, that could indeed speed up things. In fact, it’s closer to insurance strategy. It will probably not happen (but we bet it might). The low probability is aligned with startup investment mindset, like allocating funds in multiple high-tech ideas, but only expect a tiny fraction of them to succeed. Thus, financially, this bet might work or fail (for many reasons, including premature investment). c) agency recommendations (NIST and co) define the ability and standard to transact (especially between commercial and government entities), so why not comply, early learn and show you are leading a whole space? Great strategy from Google and co. I’d do the same. Hearing that from me is also controversial and unexpected, as I’ve personally spent enough time to speak with quantum scientists/labs across the world + constantly monitoring quantum computer progress + actively working on post quantum transition cryptography + starting exploring this even before my Meta cryptography lead time, along with some of Satoshi-day devs. Don’t get me wrong, exploring quantum safe transition is healthy and I’d do as well for all of the obvious aforementioned reasons. Someone has to, but understating is very important for others to balance their investment thesis.

🚨 Google has sounded the quantum alarm 🚨 Today, they released groundbreaking progress towards breaking crypto using a quantum computer. TLDR - Existing cryptography is dead. Mempool attacks are real. We must migrate to post-quantum now. Thread 🧵
