Jennifer Altman is apparently attempting to extort me. She is unhappy that I have posted this image of her and her husband Steve Libby, who has no idea how his wife behaves online. She doesn't want people to see the picture because they might tell him, and then he will be upset with her for starting internet flame wars that he gets dragged into. She wants the picture removed, and claims that she went to her local police department to tell them that I was talking about her during my Super Bowl halftime stream. She says that "nobody needs to know," but that if I don't give into her demands she will attempt to misuse police authority in order to have my bail revoked. If I do remove the image she will not attempt to hurt me by misusing police authority. She put this all in writing, and thought it would be smart to invoke my children into it. I got 2 words for you Jen - DO IT. Go to the police and tell them that you attempted to extort me by threatening to weaponize them against me because you don't like free speech on the Interent that is critical of you. DO IT!!

Today would have been my brother’s 40th birthday. It also marks six years since his death. He was 34 when he was found, alone in a cemetery, with what police described to me as a “pocketful of needles.” I was 29 at the time, newly out of an abusive relationship and in the middle of an unexpected, life-altering career change. Everything felt unstable. Before he died, my brother had been sober for nearly nine months which was the longest stretch of sobriety he’d had in well over a decade. Then the holidays came around again. Birthdays have a way of reopening wounds. We had a traumatic childhood. We lost our father when we were young, and our mother was suddenly left to raise us alone which was something she wasn’t prepared for. As the older sibling, my brother was labeled “the man of the house,” a burden no child should ever be asked to carry. That grief never left him. We both took dark paths, just in different ways. He turned to substances (whatever he could find) to numb the weight of reality. But at his core, he wasn’t a bad person. He was someone who needed support. He made many mistakes but they were born out of pain, not malice. Nine months sober was a massive achievement. And then, on one unbearably hard birthday weekend he tried to numb the pain one last time. The thing about grief is that it never truly goes away. It may get better in time, but there are days where it will hit you like a tidal wave. When he was healthy, my brother taught me important things like how to stand up for myself, how not to care so much about other people’s opinions, and (through his struggles) what not to do when life becomes overwhelming. People with addiction are more than “junkies.” They are human beings who have often seen and survived deeply traumatic things without being given the tools to cope. Sobriety should be celebrated, not treated with suspicion or mockery. Joking about when someone will relapse isn’t harmless.. it can be, and often is, deadly.
