“Proactive efforts of law enforcement officials revealed that the parents used duplicate birth certificate of their daughter to force her into marriage” In Dakshin Dinajpur district, when SI Bithi Sundar Saha, Child Welfare Officer, received information that a 16-year-old Ashma (name changed), was being forced into marriage, a special rescue team was constituted to immediately stop the marriage from taking place. While the preparations for the marriage were in full swing, the team summoned both her parents to produce Ashma’s legal documents to verify her age. As the documents were being checked by the authorities, it was discovered that her family had created a duplicate birth certificate of Ashma to get her married without getting caught by the police. With the help of proactive efforts of the law enforcement officials and intervention by the Gram Panchayat Social Welfare Officer, Asthma’s parents accepted that they created a duplicate copy of her birth certificate to get her married. Thereafter, the police officials immediately stopped the child marriage from taking place and Ashma’s custody was given to a shelter home for her safety and protection. We appreciate and acknowledge the leadership of officials like SI Bithi Sundar Saha, whose commitment to stop child marriage, led to Ashma completing her education and pursuing her dreams.
