When someone tells me, “You are a Pan-Africanist, why do you speak of democracy? It is an idea imported by White people.” I see the result of decades of acculturation and alienation that led us to believe the West brought democracy to us. This is simply false. What some today call “African-style democracy,” a system where leaders are accountable to no one, is an insult to our precolonial democratic societies.
