Windham was a state champion wrestler in high school & grew up a couple counties over from me. We were supposed to wrestle at a dual meet during the 2002-2003 season. I was at 215 and he was a very powerful & skilled heavyweight. I didn’t want to bump up and we both accepted forfeits because our schools didn’t have anyone in our respective weight classes. Once we became coworkers, he’d regularly hit me with that trademark, warm laugh & tell me I dodged him. He wasn’t wrong.

Notre Dame kicking off the college football season reminds me of the numerous times Brodie would tell these tall tales about blocking for Tony Rice in the ‘80s. And Windham, an actual former D1 offensive lineman at Troy & someone I always loved talking college ball with, would always comically call him out. I’d laugh to the point of tears. Windham and I spent so many of these fall Saturdays in cramped locker rooms across the country talking about his love for the Texas Longhorns and the game we both adored.
