@TerenaBell An office job, or any job where you're getting a W2, is a different scenario than 1099 work. In freelance writing it's common to be reimbursed for expenses related to the work or to be paid a rate that accounts for those expenses.

@KristaDiamond Well, there are tax implications to covering travel, plus no other profession pays your gas to the office. But that said, any event worth covering is professional enough to offer press passes. Sounds like an odd scenario all the way around.

Since we’re talking about the current state of writing rates: a highly regarded publication recently offered me $1,600 to write 6,000 words about an event that would have cost me at least $500 to attend and when I asked if they’d pay expenses they said I should apply for grants

@TerenaBell Often an option but was not in this case—and I'd argue that press pass aside, covering events or writing anything that requires travel often means spending money on gas, lodging, food etc.
