Exactly, this is what they are not considering. This is also why I didn’t brother improving on my dialect after a relative ridiculed me, because why? What’s the incentive? A place I will likely not spend up to 730 days altogether in my entire life and the only time I try you mock me. Bye! I don’t need it.

The real reason this debate exists is simple: for many Igbos who grew up outside the East, Igbo was optional. Let’s be honest about that instead of hiding behind soft excuses. We laugh at people for speaking bad English all the time and it hasn’t stopped anyone from learning it. Why? Because English is necessary for communication, opportunity, and belonging. I didn’t grow up speaking Igbo either. I only became fluent when I went to school in the East. I wasn’t immune to teasing. I just understood that speaking the language made integration easier. It deepened community. So I learned. If Igbo were treated with the same must learn energy we give English, this conversation wouldn’t exist. We tolerate correction in English because it’s a survival tool. If a few laughs are enough to stop you from learning your own language, then the issue isn’t mockery. It’s value. Necessity kills shyness.
