@CrucialFSR @mikey_esquire This whole discourse have me a check my own manual. Still, always buy 90, very rarely 87 (never full tank of 87 before). Usually when 90 not available at gas station I just get enough to get where I’m going/home.

This isn’t entirely accurate. @mikey_esquire has the right idea. When a car says “minimum 87 octane”, it assumes normal driving and a balance between fuel economy and reliability. What most people don’t realize is how the ECU handles this. The ECU (car's computer) is constantly testing if better octane fuel is in the tank. It does this by advancing ignition timing and “listening” for knock. If there’s no knock, it keeps the extra timing. If there is, it pulls it back. Knock is uncontrolled combustion that creates sharp pressure spikes inside the cylinder, which can damage pistons, head gaskets, and bearings over time. It’s basically like touching a pot to see if it’s hot. You only know by trying, but you feel the heat when you do. So yes, you can run lower octane if you drive gently. But under load or aggressive driving, that constant testing can lead to knock events, and over time that’s what causes damage. How do I know this? I design these things professionally.
