Our statement on the Senate's passage of its state budget:

The Senate budget eases some cuts proposed by the House by spending $ that the House put into the already huge rainy day fund. It also includes a 13th check for retirees. But it includes less in K-12 SEEK than the House budget and continues 7% cuts for many agencies.

At a time of rising grocery costs, SB 257 would create a host of new barriers for people to access needed food assistance, resulting in fewer Kentuckians receiving help with grocery bills and new costs to the state. #kyga26 kypolicy.org/senate-bill-25…

When the state refuses to cover the full cost of public school transportation, districts are forced to take money from students and teachers to cover the gap. The House budget continues this trend, underfunding school transportation by $93 million in each of the next two years.

Who would be harmed by the health insurance caps in HB 500? More than 300,000 people receive benefits through the Kentucky Employees’ Health Plan (KEHP). That’s 6.9% of Kentucky’s population. They work for 614 employers in every county of the state.

As introduced, the upcoming state budget includes major cuts to state-funded programs as lawmakers contend with falling revenues from income tax cuts. Medicaid has become a prime target, but these cuts are unnecessary and would leave Kentucky worse off. kypolicy.org/state-budget-c…
