Malawians don’t understand how to do business properly. That’s why most businesses collapse within a few years or remain stagnant. Some end up relying on questionable deals and political connections just to survive. There’s this obsession with selling to a few people at very high prices, often with little honesty in pricing, instead of building trust and volume. They don’t really understand economies of scale the way their Asian counterparts do. Business is not just about big profits on one sale, it’s about consistency, turnover, and repeat customers. Making a profit of 3 million kwacha on a car is more than enough if you are going to sell 100 cars in a year. But instead, the focus is on making 10 million kwacha from one car, which limits how many you can sell and slows everything down. It’s the same with everything, clothes, perfumes, lotions, electronics e.g phones and more. People even take pride in saying “I sell to high end clients,” but the real money is with the average Malawian because they are the ones buying every day. Sell 100 clothes a day and make 5,000 kwacha on each because your prices are fair, instead of trying to make 10,000 on one and only selling five. I don’t get why this simple logic is so hard for most Malawians to grasp!

Where can one find hunter’s hard lemon in this God forsaken country? (Apart from Chikondi stopover)
