@cenobyte @melistress I also think that the naming is something of a PR move for military mental health management. It's hard enough getting the guys Dave works with to talk about their stuff. PTSD being a soldier-thing legitimates their experiences in a way that recognizes combat trauma as distinct.

@melistress @cenobyte Kind of like how Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 are different diagnoses for the 'same' illness. Very similar overall, different enough to warrant adjacent approaches.

@melistress @cenobyte My understanding is that the diagnostics and treatments are viewed as adjacent and at times overlapping, but the origins impact what kind of symptoms show up and factors like duration, etc. Origins also shape what kind of specialists/resources you need access to for treatment.

@cenobyte @melistress Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's an emerging diagnosis for certain behaviours an individual who has dealt with neglect/abuse may exhibit. Very similar to combat derived PTSD like you'd see in soldiers, but non-combat origins/triggers.

@cenobyte @melistress Fair. I think that process is healthier than my tendency toward overthinking which prevents me from doing things that likely aren't problematic. I'd love to be done with feeling so *careful* all the time. I can't stand making others feel the way I've felt, even accidentally.

@cenobyte @melistress I think it's a glitch in my programming, honestly. There has almost always been Consequences (TM) for the embarrassment of others in my life and I've borne the brunt of a lot of them. I think it's a reflex now. My pysch says it's C-PTSD.

@cenobyte @melistress I know I wished Dave would sometimes. The man feels no shame, and while I envy that, it also leaves me in awkward situations where I feel I need to smooth over things I think he should have been more sensitive to.

@cenobyte @melistress I think it's also worth pointing out that the concept of stupid is culturally agreed-upon. What's stupid in some circles is not stupid in others. A few of my male gendered friends tell stories of their exploits that they think are hilarious that I find terribly embarrassing.

@melistress @cenobyte Dave has been really great at helping me understand that I don't have to take that kind of mortification on. We joke that it's remedial assh•le training. I often don't stick up for myself because I don't want to make waves but that causes its own issues. But I'm learning.

@melistress @cenobyte I get embarrassed when I think another person's behaviour reflects poorly on me, as if I'm being judged for spending time with them. I know exactly where it comes from. It's hard to shake. I do my best to never embarrass people I'm with because I dislike the feeling so much.
