Conspiracy theory time: I think the Mets front office wants to put a pause on number retirements after Beltran’s 15, but the only number left that would still make sense is Carter’s 8 so this was a litmus test to gauge whether or not they should before taking a break

Nick Morabito was given No. 8 by the Mets (Gary Carter's old number). Morabito will be receiving a different number tomorrow, I was just told. It's too late for the change to occur tonight.

Nick Morabito will wear uniform No. 8 for the Mets. That number had been frozen since 2001 as an unofficial way to honor Gary Carter, who wore it from 1985-89. But it was never retired. Desi Relaford last wore the number in 2001, a quarter century ago.
