It helps explain why I'm so critical of most contemporary US "auteurs."
Two examples: John Huston and Alfred Hitchcock made incredibly personal films usually based on existing literature and penned by others or with co-writers.
Is there a more personal American film masterpiece than "Vertigo?"
Hitchie didn't write it.
Sam Fuller once mentioned Anthony Veiller to me as "the guy who really wrote all of John Huston's films."

Once the check is cashed and the files turned over, it fully belongs to the author. They're free to do whatever they want with it.
