@The41stPrecinct “Getting good” is just patience. You won’t get it on the first attempt, you might not get it on the 20th attempt—but you’ll get it eventually, and that perseverance will help you with every subsequent challenge.

People who are avid Fromsoft fans, what would you say qualifies someone who has managed to “git gud” at them? What is the entry level requirement to gain respect of fellow players? It’s for a…top secret new project of mine.

film criticism isn’t customer service. it’s not here to “objectively” tell you what to expect, that’s marketing. it’s perspective, interpretation, feeling. reducing it to a guide for audiences completely misses the point of engaging with art at all lmao

“Stop thinking about art works as objects and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences. What makes a work of art good for you is not something that s already inside it but something that happens inside you.” ― Brian Eno

this is exactly what i mean by people forgetting that reading books is supposed to widen our perspectives and introduce different experiences and thoughts, not to reaffirm existing biases and project only our own beliefs into what we read/consume. very narrow way of reading imo.

you're telling me people actually think first person pov means you have to imagine yourself as the main character instead of it being, like, a character narrating their own story??

The comparison to "unfilmable" House of Leaves is understandable. But keep in mind the key aspect of HoL isn't the environment - it's the frame in a frame in a frame mutability of the act of reading. The intention being to zen koan shock the reader into feeling that we're in just another frame and at risk. To present a movie like the novel is presented - the HoL movie would have the audience wandering the theater, seeing part of it in a broom closet, part of it on the side of the building in the alley, part of it projected onto the audience. Then some of the movie is a camera aimed at the audience. The novel is far more than "oooh spooky house of uncanny dimensions".

I feel like in the last week we’ve moved from “everybody is using AI in their writing, just get over it” to “using AI to write is a gross violation of trust and an affront to the very idea of writing and thinking” and frankly I am glad we’re all finally coming to our senses

@HighSierraMan @franklinleonard A more personal American film masterpiece? Off the top of my head, A Woman Under the Influence maybe? Written and directed by Cassavetes.

It helps explain why I'm so critical of most contemporary US "auteurs." Two examples: John Huston and Alfred Hitchcock made incredibly personal films usually based on existing literature and penned by others or with co-writers. Is there a more personal American film masterpiece than "Vertigo?" Hitchie didn't write it. Sam Fuller once mentioned Anthony Veiller to me as "the guy who really wrote all of John Huston's films."
