Underreported: A new report has revealed that the United States Army is diverting roughly 70% of the food allowance funds collected from some soldiers to other expenses. Some shit you should know before you read: If you didn’t know, the Army provides enlisted service members with a Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) to help cover the cost of their meals. However, for soldiers who live in barracks, this allowance—roughly $466 per month—is automatically deducted from their paychecks to fund meals at on-base facilities. Unlike other military benefits, BAS is not based on rank or income but is instead determined by the Department of Agriculture’s food cost index. The Army is responsible for using these funds to provide meals. What’s going on now: According to a report released by Military.com, the Army diverted nearly 70% of the food allowance funds collected from junior enlisted soldiers to other expenses instead of using them for meals. Financial records from 11 of the Army’s largest bases revealed that out of the $225 million deducted from soldiers’ paychecks for food in 2024, more than $151 million was not spent on dining facilities. Some bases showed particularly notable discrepancies—Fort Stewart, Georgia, for example, collected $17 million but only spent $2.1 million on meals, meaning 87% of the funds were used elsewhere. Similarly, at Fort Cavazos, Texas, just $11.7 million of the $42.5 million collected went toward food, leaving over 72% unspent on its intended purpose. Out of the 11 bases analyzed, only two —Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, & Fort Bliss, Texas—allocated more than half of the collected funds to meals. In a statement, Army officials claimed that food purchases are based on projected meal attendance, but the report found no clear explanation for where the excess funds were redirected. In a statement, Congressman Jill Tokuda said, “The fact that at least $151 million was collected from soldiers and not spent on food as required demands not just an immediate investigation, but swift accountability.” According to Military.com, Army officials declined to answer “detailed, or even broad questions” about the money being diverted
